Fernando Alonso Denies Quick Fix Amid Rumours of Adrian Newey’s Potential Move to Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, as rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement persist.
There were rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who currently serves as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin will be his next team has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
"Alonso commented at Monza that there are still just rumors circulating, and he believes that resolving the issues is not the responsibility of a single person."
"It's largely about our current situation and production efforts. We need to recognize what is progressing well, identify what isn't, and aim to make improvements for 2025."
Next year, Newey could be free to join a new team and supervise the development of their 2026 car, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso through the end of 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth place in the constructors' championship. Fernando Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
Alonso responded, "There's nothing we can do. We're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"During an inspired weekend like this, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend was one where I performed slightly better, felt very comfortable with the car, and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits. As a result, I finished in P11."
"Yes, it's frustrating, but we have to be patient. Our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium in just four months. This is a clear example.”
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We were neck and neck with them for the initial four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, Aston Martin is not expected to make progress in the upcoming races.
“We need to upgrade the car because, as it stands, it’s just not performing well enough,” Alonso expressed in frustration.
"Fell short at Monza. Underperformed at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes won't occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands what's at stake and is putting in maximum effort. We're staying together and continuing to strive forward. We earned one point last weekend, and today we were nearly at two points. This is the challenge we face."
