Fernando Alonso: Ageless Determination and Unwavering Motivation in F1, Says Flavio Briatore

"One-of-a-kind" Fernando Alonso "remains as driven as a rookie" in Formula 1

"I've never encountered anyone so resolute on a daily basis"

Flavio Briatore admits he's unsure about the length of time Fernando Alonso will keep competing in Formula 1, noting that Alonso remains as driven as a rookie.

Flavio Briatore, now working as an advisor for Alpine, has managed Fernando Alonso's career in Formula 1 from the start. He was also Alonso's team principal at Renault during the years when Alonso clinched his world championships in 2005 and 2006.

The 43-year-old, currently the most senior driver in Formula 1, signed a new contract earlier this year to stay with Aston Martin until the end of 2026.

During an appearance on the Formula For Success podcast, Briatore was questioned regarding Alonso’s upcoming career plans.

Briatore started by saying, “I have been managing Fernando Alonso for 22 years. It's like we have a 22-year marriage.”

"Fernando remains quite challenging to comprehend, as he continues to have the drive and enthusiasm of a rookie driver."

“He’s in excellent shape, possibly even better than when he was a driver for my Renault team.”

"He resides in Monaco and cycles daily, covering distances of 60, 70, or even 80 kilometers each day."

He visits the gym daily. Whenever we have dinner together, he's extremely cautious about his food choices and never indulges.

"He's incredible. I'm not sure. If you're asking whether Fernando plans to keep going after our current contract ends… as of now, our final year is set for 2026."

"I’m not sure if he plans to continue for another year after this."

“The capability is evident; you can clearly observe it. It’s not an issue of him losing focus.”

Throughout the race, he's consistently pushing: if he's in 11th place, he strives to move up to 10th; if he's in 10th, he aims to reach 9th.

"He aims for the car to perform at a high level. His qualifying sessions are strong, and he's competing effectively."

“To be frank, I’m unsure whether he plans to retire in 2026 or extend his career by another year.”

"I'm not sure. It depends on how he feels about racing and the timing. I'm uncertain if he will have a family then."

"Without a doubt, he stands out as one of a kind. I've never encountered anyone with such daily determination."

Alonso continues to show strong performance late in his Formula 1 career. Last year, the Spanish driver secured eight podium finishes for Aston and currently holds the ninth spot in the drivers' standings, consistently placing within the top eight.
