Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Speculations: ‘More Than One Man Needed’ to Fix Aston Martin’s Woes
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, as rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement persist.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
During a discussion at Monza, Alonso commented, "At this point, there are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one individual's responsibility to resolve the issues."
"It's about evaluating our current situation and production. We need to recognize what's working well and what's not, and use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey's potential availability next year could enable him to supervise the 2026 car development for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the close of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major offensive in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are dependent on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all every weekend.”
"During a particularly motivated weekend like this, I am certain it will remain entirely unnoticed."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in terms of performance, often finishing the race just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those instances where I had a slight edge. I felt good with the car and pushed it perhaps even beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in 11th place."
"Yes, it's frustrating. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
“However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us.”
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull highlights that we need to elevate our standards and improve our performance."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso commented, "I believe we still have time to respond."
"McLaren went from last place to reaching the podium in just four months, providing clear evidence."
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched their performance in the first four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance was lacking in Monza. It wasn't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I believe significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. The team understands what's at stake and is giving it their all. We're staying together and continuing to press forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we face."
