Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘We Need More Than One Man to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation of Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, even as Adrian Newey remains associated with the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hint that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin will be his next team has intensified lately, while rumors of him joining Ferrari have diminished.
During an appearance at Monza, Alonso commented that there are still just rumors circulating and emphasized that resolving the issues is not the responsibility of a single individual.
"It's about assessing our current situation and what we are creating. We need to identify what's working, what's not, and make improvements to better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is free next year, he could manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility in Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth and preparation for Aston Martin ahead of their major efforts in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are dependent on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts each weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend like this, from my perspective, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those weekends where I performed a bit better. I felt comfortable with the car and pushed it to its limits, perhaps even beyond, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and remember that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to step up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make changes."
"McLaren advanced from last place to podium finishes within a span of four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is unsatisfactory and will remain so until an upgrade is made.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. The results were unsatisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is working tirelessly. So yes, we remain united. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
