Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘Excuses Are Not Enough
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
Fernando Alonso states, "I don’t like making excuses," as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing rumors about Adrian Newey’s involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, plans to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers about Aston Martin potentially being his next team have intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have subsided.
At Monza, Alonso commented that the information is still just hearsay and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of one individual.
"It's about assessing our current situation and output. We need to identify what is progressing positively, what isn't, and make preparations to improve for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the development of a 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant benefit when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll finished in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"I can tell that this will be an entirely anonymous weekend, just like this one, which has left me feeling inspired."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished races within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing its limits, perhaps even exceeding 100%. As a result, I secured P11.
"Feeling let down, we have to stay patient and realize that our main goal is for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our performance. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next season, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren jumped from last place to the podium within four months, providing a clear example."
“Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were neck and neck with Mercedes, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current state won't improve until it's upgraded, and that its performance is currently inadequate.
"Performance fell short in Monza. It wasn't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"There likely won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. So yes, we remain unified and continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
