Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Woes: ‘We Need More Than One Man
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an imminent announcement involving Adrian Newey
"I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, as rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement persist.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of the next year. Following his departure, he will have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have faded.
"At Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information currently circulating is just speculative and emphasized that addressing the issues isn't solely up to one individual."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what isn't, and strive to improve things for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has committed substantial funds to build a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a more aggressive push
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts each weekend."
"A weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, will remain entirely private."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have often been very close, typically finishing races just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those times where I performed slightly better. I was satisfied with the car and pushed myself perhaps beyond my limits, which resulted in finishing in P11.
"Yes, I'm feeling disappointed. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and currently ahead of us."
“However, being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is not acceptable. We must improve and elevate our performance.”
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, mentioning, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, providing us with clear evidence."
"Similarly, Mercedes had the same start as we did. We were on par with them for the initial four races, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't accept excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the car's current performance is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Insufficient performance at Monza. Below par at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So, yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
