Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement from Adrian Newey this week
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's difficulties, saying he doesn't believe in making excuses
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock at the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey shortly.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be at liberty to join a competing Formula 1 team.
In recent weeks, speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
"Currently, everything is just speculation, and I believe that resolving the issues isn't the responsibility of a single individual," Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and aim to prepare for 2025 more effectively."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could take charge of developing the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through 2026. They plan to collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin ahead of a major push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, perhaps even beyond, which led to a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not being in the competition for the top four positions. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso mentioned, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from the last place to securing a podium finish in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
“Furthermore, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We were neck and neck with them for the initial four races, and they have already secured three victories this year. Hence, I don’t support making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso angrily stated, "Until we get an upgrade for the car, this is the best we can do, and it's simply not sufficient."
"Performance at Monza was insufficient. The same can be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe there won't be any significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what's happening. They're giving it their all. So, yes, we're staying together and continuing to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we'll face."
