Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
Fernando Alonso states, "I don't like making excuses," amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a "single individual," even as Adrian Newey's name keeps surfacing in discussions.
Rumors circulating among the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be free to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of him potentially joining Ferrari have subsided.
"There's still just speculation, and I believe it's not just one person's responsibility to make improvements," Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current status and what we're creating. We need to identify what's progressing well and what isn't, so we can better plan for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso extending through to the close of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather discouraging.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin ahead of their major efforts in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"A weekend like this one, where I feel inspired, is something I know will remain totally anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races very close together, usually just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those instances where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to the limit, perhaps even beyond 100%, which resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
“However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and clearly ahead of us.”
"Currently, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull shows that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from the back of the pack to a podium finish in just four months. This provides a clear example."
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season at the same level as we did. During the initial four races, we were on par with them, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza was subpar. The results at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also disappointing."
"I believe that without introducing new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain together. We continue striving. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we face."
