Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job to Fix Things

Fernando Alonso dismisses excuses amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than a single individual, as speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement persists.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their recruitment of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his potential new team has intensified recently, while rumors of a possible move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso mentioned at Monza that there are still just rumors circulating and that solving the issues isn't something one person can handle alone.
"It’s about evaluating our current situation and output. We need to identify what is progressing correctly and what isn’t, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey could be available to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation before Aston Martin makes a significant push in 2026.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are striving to perform our best each weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, similar to this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or I'm in front. This weekend, I performed slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car's performance and pushed it to its limits, perhaps even beyond what was expected, which resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe we can acknowledge as a team that we are not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and currently ahead of us."
"However, currently being outperformed by teams like Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear that we have to elevate our performance. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from last place to securing a podium finish in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on par with Mercedes for the initial four races, and they have already clinched three victories this year. Therefore, I don't favor making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show any progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying, "I believe that until we improve the car, this is the best we can do, and it simply isn't satisfactory."
"Performance in Monza was subpar. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also disappointing."
“I believe that without introducing new components, there won’t be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin.”
"That's the strategy. The team knows the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we stay together and continue to strive. Last weekend we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that will be our challenge."
