Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Struggles Continue
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso stresses that solving Aston Martin's issues will require more than just a single individual, even as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified in recent weeks about Aston Martin being his potential future team, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented that there are still just rumors circulating, and he believes that solving the issues isn't the responsibility of just one person.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey’s availability could enable him to manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, potentially providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a new deal with Alonso that extends until the close of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine in line with the upcoming regulations.
However, in the meantime, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth place in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a more aggressive strategy
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso commented. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
A weekend filled with inspiration, like the one I'm experiencing, will remain entirely unknown to others.
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in races, usually finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether ahead or behind. This weekend, I performed slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Indeed, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must improve our performance. We need to elevate our standards."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“McLaren progressed from the last position to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This provides us with clear instances.
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched them in performance for the first four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is insufficient and will remain so until an upgrade is made.
"Performance was lacking at Monza. It was also subpar at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't anticipate significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That’s the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we stay together. We continue to strive. Last weekend we secured one point. Today we nearly got two points, and that’s the challenge we face."
