Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires a team effort and cannot be achieved by a single individual, despite ongoing rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin will be his next team has intensified lately, while rumors about a possible move to Ferrari have diminished.
“It’s still just rumors at this point, and I believe it’s not solely up to one person to address the issues,” Alonso stated at Monza.
"It's about assessing our current situation and output. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and then use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year could enable him to manage the development of a 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new Silverstone facility and secured a contract with Alonso that runs through 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin ahead of a significant push in 2026
"We're powerless in this situation," Alonso responded. "Ultimately, it's up to our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend."
"An inspiring weekend, just like the one I'm experiencing, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in our races, finishing within two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I performed slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in an eleventh-place finish."
"Yes, I'm disappointed. We need to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are leading and significantly ahead of us."
“However, currently being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, we must elevate our standards and improve.”
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren made significant progress in just four months, going from the last position to securing a spot on the podium. This is a clear demonstration of
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on par with us. In the initial four races, we were evenly matched, and they've already secured three victories this year. I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is unsatisfactory and won't improve until an upgrade is implemented.
"Fell short at Monza. Underperformed at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, Baku, Singapore, and Austin won't see significant changes."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So, yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we were nearly at two points, and that's the fight we are in."
