Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘No Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, even as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe it’s not solely one person’s responsibility to make improvements,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we are creating. We need to identify what is progressing well, what isn't, and work on improving things for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a state-of-the-art facility in Silverstone and secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot in the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I put in our best effort every weekend.”
"During an inspired weekend like this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely private."
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in terms of performance, finishing races just two or three seconds apart—either he was ahead or I was. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps more than 100% of its capability, which resulted in me finishing in 11th place."
"Indeed, it’s frustrating. We must remain patient and recognize that our primary objective is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind teams like Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Regarding next year’s vehicle, Alonso commented, “I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a podium finish in just four months, clearly demonstrating significant improvement."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on par with them for the first four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, Aston Martin is not expected to make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car would remain inadequate until an upgrade is implemented.
"Subpar performance in Monza. Below expectations in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
“This is what we’re aiming for. Everyone on the team knows what’s going on. They’re giving it their all. So yes, we’re staying together and continuing to push forward. We earned one point last weekend. Today, we almost got two, and that’s the challenge we’re facing.”
