Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
Fernando Alonso on Aston Martin's difficulties: "Excuses aren't my thing"
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey’s involvement.
Insiders at the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his new team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have decreased.
"There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to make improvements," Alonso stated at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and output. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn't, and then make improvements as we plan for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to manage the 2026 car for a new team, possibly providing them with a significant benefit when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has put significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We’re reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in maximum effort every weekend."
"A weekend filled with inspiration, similar to the one I’m experiencing, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those times where I performed a bit better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, finding ourselves trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear that we need to improve our performance. We must elevate our standards."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to respond."
"McLaren advanced from the bottom to the podium in just four months. This provides us with clear evidence."
“Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched their performance in the first four races, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't accept any excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current performance is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is putting in maximum effort. We're staying cohesive and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point, and today we nearly secured two points. This is the challenge we face."
