Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘One Man Can’t Fix Everything
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just the efforts of a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors about a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to set things right."
"It's really about evaluating our current situation and output. We need to identify what aspects are progressing positively and which ones are not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made a significant investment in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They are collaborating with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a more aggressive strategy
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, much like this one from my perspective, I am certain it will remain entirely confidential."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend was one of those times where I performed slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, which earned me a P11 finish."
"Absolutely, it's a letdown. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our ultimate goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, demonstrating clear progress.”
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched their performance in the initial four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t support making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is insufficient and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance fell short in Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team is informed about the circumstances. Everyone is giving their best effort. So yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend we earned one point; today we nearly secured two, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
