Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about Adrian Newey's announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues will require more than a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Speculation at the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is stepping down as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Upon his departure, he will be able to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Rumors suggesting that Aston Martin could be his next team have intensified lately, while speculation about a potential move to Ferrari has diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe it’s not the responsibility of a single person to make things right,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's really about what we currently possess and what we are creating. It's important to grasp what is progressing positively, what is not, and to aim to improve our approach for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year could enable him to lead the design of a 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso extending through 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. Fernando Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate, Lance Stroll, ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation before Aston Martin makes a major push in 2026.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend.”
"During a weekend full of inspiration, such as the one I'm experiencing, I am confident it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within a two or three-second gap, with one of us always either just ahead or just behind the other. This weekend, I happened to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to its utmost limits, possibly even exceeding 100%. As a result, I secured the 11th position.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and realize that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"We need to step up our game because currently, we are trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso mentioned, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren progressed from the last position to securing a spot on the podium within a span of four months. Therefore, we have clear instances of such
“Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were evenly matched, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t accept excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see progress in the upcoming races.
“I feel that until the car gets an upgrade, this is the best we can do, and it’s not satisfactory,” Alonso complained.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"So, unless we introduce new components, I don't anticipate any significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"The strategy is clear. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We remain united and continue to push forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
