Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about a possible announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's current difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his upcoming team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
"There's still just speculation, and I believe it's not the responsibility of just one person to solve the issues," Alonso stated at Monza.
"It's mainly about our current status and ongoing efforts. We need to recognize what is progressing well and what is not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year could enable him to manage the 2026 vehicle for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin ahead of a more aggressive push in 202
“We’re powerless in this situation,” Alonso responded. “Ultimately, it’s up to our team, and both Lance and I are putting in maximum effort every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, like the one I'm experiencing, I understand it will remain entirely unnoticed."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he was just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better. I felt comfortable with the car and pushed myself beyond what I thought was my limit, which resulted in an 11th place finish.
"Indeed, I'm feeling disappointed. We have to remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to respond."
"McLaren advanced from the last place to the podium in just four months, providing us with clear examples."
"Similarly, Mercedes had the same beginning as we did. We were on par with Mercedes for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso angrily stated that the current state of the car is insufficient and will remain so until an upgrade is made.
"Performance was lacking in Monza. The results were disappointing in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That’s our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We remain united and continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly earned two, and that’s the challenge we’re facing."
