Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that it will take more than a single individual to resolve Aston Martin's issues, even as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their deal with Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year. At that time, he will be eligible to begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his potential new team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that resolving the issues isn't solely one person's responsibility."
"It's more about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to identify what is progressing well, what isn't, and to aim for better preparation for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability means he could supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract for Alonso that extends through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine in line with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major offensive in
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso commented. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts each weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, as this one is for me, I am certain it will remain entirely private."
"This season, Lance and I have consistently finished very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
“However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us.”
"We find ourselves trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull. It's clear that we need to improve and elevate our performance."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, “I believe we still have time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from finishing last to reaching the podium within a span of four months. We have definite examples of this improvement."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not inclined to make excuses."
However, Aston Martin is not expected to see progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is inadequate and won't improve until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance fell short in Monza. The results were lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
“That’s the strategy. The group understands the circumstances. They are giving it their all. So yes, we remain cohesive and keep striving. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we were nearly at two points, and this will be our challenge.”
