F1’s Essential Summer Break: Understanding the 14-Day Factory Shutdown and Its Impact on Teams and Staff
What is the F1 summer break, why does it take place, and how long does it last?
The break happens following the final grand prix in July. In 2024, this will be after the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, where George Russell's disqualification led to Lewis Hamilton's victory.
According to Article 21.8 of the sporting regulations, F1 teams are required to close their factories for a period of 14 days.
Creating, designing, or manufacturing cars in any form is prohibited during this two-week period.
Only essential operations and departments not directly linked to car development are permitted to proceed.
Why does Formula 1 take a summer break?
The regulation ensures that employees of Formula 1 teams get a period of rest away from their jobs.
During the winter months, especially around Christmas and New Year, the staff are extremely occupied with finalizing their new cars in preparation for the upcoming season.
The summer break is a required interval during which F1 teams are obligated to give their employees some time off.
Teams are not required to schedule their 14-day breaks simultaneously.
When does the summer vacation conclude?
The Formula 1 season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 23-25.
Formula 1 will host nine more grand prix races before the season concludes, including the international events.
