F1 Shake-Up: Sainz’s Williams Move Sparks Driver Market Frenzy, Leaves Audi and Alpine in Limbo
What's in store for Audi and Alpine now that Carlos Sainz has signed with Williams?
What impact will Carlos Sainz's move to Williams have on the rest of the Formula 1 driver market?
Only a single day has passed since the F1 summer break began, and already changes are happening in the driver lineup.
On Monday, Sainz solidified his future with Williams by agreeing to a contract that spans multiple years.
Several teams were interested in signing Sainz for next year, considering him the top driver on the market.
The Spanish driver eventually chose to join James Vowles' thrilling venture at Williams, agreeing to stay with the team in Grove for a minimum of two years.
This provides Williams with an excellent duo, as Sainz joins Alex Albon.
As a result, both the Sauber-Audi team and Alpine are still in search of a second driver.
Sauber/Audi
Audi finds itself in a challenging situation as several of their preferred candidates have eluded them.
According to reports, Sainz was their preferred choice, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly also being considered.
None of the three drivers have chosen to relocate to Hinwil, instead deciding to stay with or join other teams in the midfield.
The fact that multiple drivers have decided not to join Sauber and Audi casts a negative light on the team. This situation raises questions about the team's future.
Nico Hulkenberg joined the team earlier this year, securing one of the available positions.
Hulkenberg's impressive achievements with Haas, along with his German nationality, made him a clear selection.
Regarding the second seat, their choices have become quite restricted.
If they wish to keep him, Valtteri Bottas, the current driver, is evidently the quickest choice available.
Some could contend that selecting him for the Audi project might lack excitement; however, considering the primary other options are his underwhelming teammate Zhou Guanyu and former Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, who was let go, Bottas appears to be the leading candidate to retain the position.
Audi may be interested in observing Daniel Ricciardo's future decisions and whether he remains with Red Bull.
This scenario might make Liam Lawson a viable option should Ricciardo remain with the team.
F1 journalist Lawrence Barretto reports that Audi holds a high regard for Sergio Perez. Nonetheless, Christian Horner assured Perez's position with Red Bull after an important meeting on Monday.
Alpine
Alpine is another team facing a limited number of choices.
Alpine was making efforts to secure a deal with Sainz, with Flavio Briatore playing a key role in the talks.
The prospect of Mercedes engines from 2026 didn't convince Sainz to join Enstone.
It seems that Alpine has two distinct options.
If they are looking for a seasoned and dependable driver, Bottas is probably the best option.
Nevertheless, Jack Doohan might receive the opportunity, as the Australian has been consistently participating in tests for the French team.
Barretto mentioned that Valtteri Bottas is considered a strong contender if the team prioritizes experience, whereas Jack Doohan is the leading candidate if they prefer to focus on youth and advance their Driver Academy talent.
