F1 Drama at Monza: Oscar Piastri Criticizes Lance Stroll’s ‘Rookie’ Driving, Costing Crucial Time in Pursuit of Victory
Oscar Piastri criticized Lance Stroll, accusing him of driving as if it was his first time in a go-kart, which Piastri claimed hindered his progress in chasing down Charles Leclerc.
Oscar Piastri criticized Lance Stroll for “driving as if it were his first time in a go-kart” after being given blue flags during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
The McLaren racer was employing a two-stop tactic and quickly closing in on Charles Leclerc, who had executed a daring one-stop strategy, during a late-stage fight for victory in Sunday’s grand prix at Monza.
In the end, Piastri finished in second place, trailing Leclerc by only 2.6 seconds at the finish line. He lost valuable time while passing Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and navigating through backmarkers like Aston Martin’s Stroll.
"I immediately inquired about the speed I needed to catch up to Charles," Piastri said to reporters, including those from Crash.net, during the post-race press conference.
"The speed I required matched what I managed in the initial laps. During that time, I felt quite hopeful. However, I lost a significant amount of time staying behind Carlos."
“It seemed like Stroll was driving as if he was new to go-karting. I’m not sure what he was thinking when he noticed the blue flag, but it ended up costing another second.”
"I had to execute that segment flawlessly to secure the victory, but minor issues slightly diminished our chances. Although it was always going to be challenging, we weren't too far from making it happen."
"I was giving it my all and couldn't have gone any quicker. Unfortunately, I fell just a little short."
When questioned about how much he had contemplated a single-stop strategy, Piastri responded: "Obviously, not as much as I should have. I believe it was a significant gamble for me to take."
The topic of tyre graining has been a prominent discussion throughout the weekend. During practice sessions, experiencing graining essentially meant the session was over. The initial stint on medium tyres was also quite challenging.
"When I made my second pit stop, my front left tire was significantly worn. My pace was decreasing. Therefore, it seemed reasonable to pit once more. I suppose no one anticipated that the tire wear on Charles' car would improve."
"Looking back, it's obvious that stopping just once was the correct decision. However, during the first lap of the race, considering all the data we had collected over the weekend, it appeared very risky."
"Being in the lead or at the front in any race can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. The competitors behind you have the ability to respond to your moves. In Charles' case, choosing a two-stop strategy would have secured him third place, while opting for a one-stop strategy, even if it led to a significant drop in performance, would still have resulted in a third-place finish."
"He successfully managed the one-stop strategy, making the Ferrari appear exceptional today. It’s definitely painful now, but at the time, it was the correct decision.”
