Chancellor risks losing momentum in the new year battle and earning the nickname 'reshuffle Rachel' following recent allegations about her history

Critics from the opposition have dubbed her "Rachel from Accounts". Yet, is the chancellor on the brink of becoming "Rachel for Reshuffle"?

Senior political reporter @joncraig

Thursday, February 13, 2025, 5:

Among opposition members of parliament, she is colloquially known as "Rachel from

In addition to allegations of padding her resume, she is also facing scrutiny over her expense reports.

The finance minister has faced allegations of participating in a financial misconduct issue during her tenure at Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).

Allegations suggest she splurged on a variety of items including handbags, earrings, wine, taxi rides, a Christmas celebration, and indeed, perfume, all amounting to hundreds of pounds.

The claims seem dubious at first glance, yet she maintains that she was unaware of any investigation and that no one questioned her.

Kemi Badenoch is insisting that she be fully transparent, not only regarding her résumé but also about the conditions surrounding her departure from HBOS.

According to her lawyer, he was under the impression that when Ms. Reeves departed, it was amicably. She retained her company car and additional perks for a half-year and received a positive recommendation.

"David Sorenson from Leeds-based Morrish Solicitors firmly states that the HBOS HR team did not bring up any claims of improper behavior or misconduct throughout the procedure."

Former HBOS HR director, Jayne Wayper, also states: "The allegations and claims directed at Rachel Reeves are unfamiliar to me."

All of this adds to the ongoing "CV-gate" scandal, indicating that "Rachel from Accounts" might have exaggerated her credentials, presenting herself as "Rachel from the Bank of England" rather than the more accurate "Rachel from HBOS" that she truly is.

Today has been a significant day for Ms. Reeves, as she celebrates her 46th birthday. Quite lovely, indeed.

Recent data revealed a modest expansion in the economy during the final quarter of the previous year, providing some reassurance.

The recent allegations have led to renewed doubts among Members of Parliament about her ability to remain in her position following Sir Keir Starmer's major reshuffle expected in the upcoming spring or summer. It's a troubling situation.

It had become apparent that the "Rachel from Economics" we knew was the same as "Rachel from Retail Banking", "Rachel from IT", and "Rachel from Administration".

This instance involves allegations that she overstated the duration of her tenure at the Bank of England. The situation is now becoming increasingly perplexing.

Initially, the chancellor stated she was employed at the Bank of England for nearly ten years. Later, she clarified her tenure was from September 2000 to December 2006.

It has now come to light that she departed from the Bank in March 2006, following her appearance in a photo with HBOS colleagues at a Council of Mortgage Lenders event that same month. Quite the slip-up!

Critics, including members from her own Labour Party, are relentless, and the female politician, who often draws comparisons to Gordon Brown with her "iron chancellor" persona, finds her reputation under severe scrutiny once more.

Her main issue is that she frequently touts her background as an economist at the Bank of England and her experience in banking as reasons why voters should have confidence in her handling of the country's financial affairs.

This introduces another issue. If the economic situation were currently excellent, it would be simpler for her to downplay the allegations concerning her resume and financial claims.

However, detractors argue that the economy is on a collision course, and they pin much of the blame for the government's issues on her, including winter fuel payments, hikes in national insurance, inheritance taxes on farmers, among other things.

Following a recent resurgence in rumors about her career, the financial outlook for "Rachel from Accounts" has once again taken a downturn after the new year.

She urgently requires more favorable economic developments, specifically the kind of growth that remains hard to capture.

If not, even with Sir Keir's support up to this point, she risks being labeled "Rachel for the Reshuffle", or something even more detrimental.

Trump’s Tariff Tumult: Rising Costs and Global Trade Shocks Unfold as U.S. Policy Clashes with International Partners

Published

on

By

The potential increase in American prices might be the most significant obstacle to Donald Trump's tariff strategy. The effects of tariffs on the UK remain unclear until further information is disclosed in April, however, experts predict that it might increase the cost of our exports by 21%.

Business and financial journalist @pkelso

Friday, February 14, 2025 01:19

On the surface, Donald Trump's support for mutual tariffs signals an all-out trade conflict, potentially representing the largest non-war disruption to international trade in peacetime.

He is fulfilling a campaign pledge to tackle the roughly trillion-dollar trade deficit—the gap between the value of America's exports and its imports—which he views as a burden on American employment, by vowing to impose import duties on countries that apply tariffs or VAT on US exports.

He intends to implement tariffs as a means of "external revenue generation," aiming to reduce the US deficit while also making imports more expensive compared to domestic goods, according to the strategy.

Stay updated: Trump's new trade tariffs

He has pledged to revive key sectors, including reclaiming chip production from Taiwan, as well as automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturing that has shifted to Europe, with a strategy designed specifically for each country to challenge the current norms.

For optimal video playback, it is recommended to utilize the Chrome browser.

Uncertainty persists regarding the threat to the UK

He seems to be focusing on the key countries with which there is the largest trade deficit.

Mexico and Canada, alongside the European Union—which notably imposes a 10% tariff on U.S. automobiles—plus the 'BRICS' countries: Brazil, Russia, India (which levies a 9% tariff on U.S. goods), China, and South Africa.

The full implications for the UK won't be clear until the specifics are disclosed in April, however, this development undermines the growing belief among Whitehall officials that Britain could navigate through the turmoil with minimal damage.

Firstly, the United States maintains a trade surplus with the United Kingdom – interestingly, due to a statistical anomaly, the UK also believes it has a surplus. Furthermore, Brexit has positioned the UK outside of the European Union, theoretically enabling it to be more flexible.

In 2021, following negotiations led by former trade secretary Liz Truss, the UK significantly reduced tariffs on a limited number of American products. This agreement eliminated import duties on items like denim and motorcycles entering the UK, and on cashmere and Scotch whisky exported to the US.

However, VAT is applied to imports, and Mr. Trump's warning to consider the sales tax as a substitute for a tariff is likely to concern British exporters.

U.S. tariffs expected to increase costs

Experts predict that tariffs might increase export costs by 21%, resulting in a £24 billion reduction in the country's earnings.

Medications, automobiles, chemical products, scientific tools, and the aerospace sector — key elements of our £182 billion export market to the US — could all face impacts.

The discomfort will undoubtedly be felt by all.

Tariffs are the responsibility of the importer, not the exporter, and even Mr. Trump acknowledges that they will lead to inflation.

Escalating costs on Main Street might become the primary obstacle to the president's tariff strategy.

Harman Asserts MPs Linked to Disputed Labour WhatsApp Group Should Not Be in Parliament

Harriet Harman, a veteran Labour MP with 42 years of service, expressed to Sky News' Electoral Dysfunction podcast that Andrew Gwynne and Oliver Ryan would not have been chosen as parliamentary candidates had the messages from the "Trigger Me Timbers" WhatsApp group been public prior to their selection.

Friday, February 14, 2025, at 5

Harriet Harman has stated that individuals who took the messages in a contentious Labour WhatsApp group seriously should not have been elected as MPs initially.

During an appearance on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, the experienced Labour MP described the scandal as "very serious," pointing out that it reinforces the public's perception of MPs as disdainful towards their constituents.

Ms. Harman served as a Labour MP for over four decades and is currently a member of the House of Lords.

The controversy surrounding the "Trigger Me Timbers" WhatsApp group has led to the dismissal of former health minister Andrew Gwynne from his governmental role and his suspension from the Labour Party.

Colleague Oliver Ryan has been temporarily removed from his party duties.

Both individuals continue to serve as Members of Parliament

Additionally, 11 council members in Manchester have been suspended, one of whom is the spouse of Mr. Gwynne.

During her podcast appearance, Ms. Harman expressed, "I believe it's a serious issue. A common perception is that MPs speak eloquently in public, yet privately, they hold disdain for their constituents."

"People often express certain opinions openly, while privately holding entirely different beliefs."

"This WhatsApp group has clearly demonstrated just that."

"Many have commented, 'it was foolish to document this', yet I believe the matter is significantly deeper."

"I believe that if someone harbors racist attitudes, holds antisemitic views, and shows disdain for the constituents they are meant to represent, they should not serve as a Member of Parliament.

"It doesn't mean you can't note it in a WhatsApp group.

"Being an MP probably isn't the right role for you."

Further details: Understanding the purported texts and their senders. Eleven council members face suspension amid controversy. Parliament member expresses profound remorse over his remarks.

Ms. Harman stated that if the local Labour branch had been aware of the messages in the WhatsApp group, they would not have chosen Mr. Ryan and Mr. Gwynne as their parliamentary candidates.

She continued, "Keir Starmer was completely correct in his immediate response, asserting that such individuals have no place in the Labour Party."

"This carries political hazards, as any upcoming by-elections could prove to be particularly challenging."

Ex-Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson believes that voluntary by-elections are improbable.

She informed the podcast, "We are roughly half a year into the parliamentary term.

"Both individuals can continue to earn a salary exceeding £90,000 for a duration of four and a half years, regardless of their affiliation with the Labour Party."

"I don't believe they will willingly step down and compete for their position again."

She also highlighted that since both men are from constituencies near Greater Manchester, Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party will face more competition from Reform than from the Conservatives, something he would likely prefer to avoid as it could boost Nigel Farage's party.

UK Braces for Impact as Trump Proposes Tariffs Based on Global VAT Rates

UK anticipates Trump's decision on proposed tariffs

President Donald Trump's recent tariff strategy considers incorporating the sales taxes imposed on American products globally. An analysis suggests that this could significantly impact the UK, making it particularly vulnerable.

Friday, February 14, 2025, 12:

The UK and the United States are currently engaged in a standoff over tariffs, with concerns mounting that President Donald Trump's recent policy moves might particularly affect the UK.

On Thursday, the President of the United States announced that he has instructed his administration to review the tariffs that could be imposed on foreign countries, taking into account the Value Added Tax (VAT) that those countries levy on American products.

This move represents another phase in Mr. Trump's efforts to repatriate manufacturing to the United States and impose fees on countries wishing to enter the US market. He has requested that a report be finalized by April.

Pat McFadden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, informed Sophy Ridge on the Politics Hub that the UK is assessing its response.

He explained to Sky News, "Occasionally, tariffs are declared and then, just a few days later, they are retracted."

Mr. Trump's recent statement was released shortly before Mr. McFadden's interview with Sky News.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had a phone conversation with Mr. Trump on Thursday afternoon, according to a Downing Street spokesperson. This call took place concurrently with a meeting that involved the prime minister and the president’s special envoy to the UK, Mark Burnett.

The spokesperson noted that Mr. Burnett and Sir Keir highlighted the immense opportunities for deepening cooperation in trade, technology, and cultural areas between the US and the UK.

Kemi Badenoch, head of the Conservative Party, called on Sir Keir to restart trade discussions with the U.S. in order to reach a deal that would eliminate tariffs.

Paul Ashworth, the lead analyst for North America at Capital Economics, predicted that the UK would rank as the fourth most affected country should President Trump's administration implement universal minimum WTO tariffs in addition to the national VAT rates for each country.

India will face a 29% tariff, while Brazil will see a 28% rate, with the European Union at 25% and the United Kingdom at 24%.

The Trump administration is considering examining subsidies, stringent regulatory demands on American companies, and limitations on animal and plant products.

This may refer to the UK's food safety standards, which have blocked the sale of chlorine-treated chicken from the US in Britain.

Mr. McFadden informed Sky News that it is not the government's policy to respond to every statement made by Mr. Trump.

"He said, 'We made the choice not to relentlessly pursue every headline that emerged over the past month.'"

"I believe that is the correct choice."

Mr. McFadden stated, "It is the government's responsibility to defend the national interest. However, truly serving the national interest involves sustaining strong trade relations with essential global partners."

Starmer Affirms UK’s Support for Ukraine’s NATO Path in Defiance of Trump’s Stance

Ukraine remains committed to becoming a NATO member, Starmer assures Zelenskyy

Sir Keir Starmer's stance seems to conflict with that of the White House, following Donald Trump's statement that he doubts Russia would permit Ukraine to enter NATO.

Journalism focused

Friday, February 14, 2025, 4:

Sir Keir Starmer has assured Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine's trajectory towards NATO membership remains firm and unalterable.

Downing Street reported that the leaders of the UK and Ukraine had a phone conversation early Friday morning.

The discussion took place less than a day after Donald Trump, speaking to journalists at the White House, stated that he couldn't envision a scenario where "a country in Russia's position" would permit Ukraine to become a member of NATO.

Recent Developments in Ukraine: Chernobyl Struck by Russian Drones

John Coale, the deputy envoy to Ukraine for Mr. Trump, stated on Thursday that the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO remains under consideration.

The American leader has consistently expressed his desire to conclude the conflict in Ukraine and has shown interest in initiating peace talks.

He is advocating for increased European backing for Kyiv, alongside reduced financial contributions from the US.

For an improved video experience, it is recommended to utilize the Chrome browser.

A spokesperson from Downing Street mentioned that Sir Keir initiated the discussion by emphasizing the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine for the duration it is required.

They also stated: "He made it clear that Ukraine must be involved in any discussions about it."

"Ukraine required robust protective assurances, additional military support, and an autonomous future, and it could rely on the UK to rise to the occasion, he added.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the UK remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine's unalterable course towards NATO membership, a consensus reached by partners during the summit in Washington the previous year.

In a conversation about the approaching three-year mark since Ukraine valiantly defended its independence against Russia's brutal large-scale invasion, the leaders concurred that this milestone would serve as a crucial opportunity to show global solidarity and backing for Ukraine.

The officials discussed the prime minister's recent trip to Kyiv and the president shared updates about his agenda for the Munich Security Conference.

"They decided to keep in regular communication."

A post on Mr. Zelenskyy's social platforms stated: "I updated Prime Minister Starmer on my conversation with President Trump and interactions with the American representatives. It is crucial that Ukrainian and American groups collaborate with Europeans and all our international allies to secure tangible outcomes.

"The stability of each country is reliant on enhancing our shared security measures. It is essential that every passing week yields concrete outcomes that contribute to a durable and dependable peace."

"We further explored a strategy for the upcoming period to develop a unified approach on security, economic collaboration, and political alliance."

Starmer Takes a Stand Against Trump

Political Correspondent

Following a period where Donald Trump has disrupted traditional international alliances and shattered diplomatic norms, the UK government is now beginning to respond.

Breaking our commitments to Ukraine is a boundary that should not be crossed, particularly for a prime minister who lately appears more intent on currying favor with the new president—aiming to dodge severe trade tariffs—rather than defending our longstanding alliances.

In a morning conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed his solid backing for Ukraine, pledging "robust security commitments, additional military support, and a sovereign future." He also emphasized that negotiations should not occur "about Ukraine without Ukraine," echoing a stance long maintained by both the UK and its Western allies.

Earlier this week, Mr. Trump shattered the existing agreement with his friendly 90-minute phone conversation with President Vladimir Putin, implying that Ukraine would need to cede land and abandon its NATO aspirations as conditions for any peace agreement.

Up until this point, Sir Keir has adopted a cautious approach toward his outspoken American counterpart, banking on the idea that the fiery speeches will eventually lose touch with the actual situation. The UK has remained silent, not voicing any objections to the harsh tariffs imposed on our close ally, Canada.

On the issue of Ukraine, the Prime Minister is adopting a stronger position — not only by broadly expressing his support but also by specifically affirming the country’s “irreversible path to NATO,” a decision endorsed by allies during last year’s Washington Summit.

Becoming a member of NATO, where an assault on one member is considered an assault on all, would serve as the supreme assurance of safety for Ukraine. The Russians view this as the highest form of provocation.

Evidently, Ukraine's admission into NATO, lacking backing from its largest member, would be extremely unlikely. However, the Prime Minister has demonstrated his readiness to expend his political influence with Donald Trump to support Ukraine. The unpredictable president's reaction remains uncertain; yet, this move is likely to receive wide approval both in Westminster and elsewhere.

American representatives are poised to engage in discussions with Russian delegates at the Munich Security Conference, aiming to negotiate a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.

Mr. Trump mentioned that Ukraine has been asked to join the discussions; however, Kyiv has indicated that it does not anticipate engaging in talks with Moscow today.

Statements from Mr. Trump regarding the negotiations — specifically that Ukraine would neither reclaim its borders from 2014 nor become a member of NATO — have been met with disapproval from both critics of Russia and advocates for Ukraine.

🎧 Subscribe to Trump 100 on your preferred podcast platform 🎧

John Bolton, the national security adviser during the president's initial term, stated, "Continual compromises with Moscow jeopardize American national security."

This week, the Trump administration dramatically undermined NATO's stance on Ukraine along with the Belovezha Accords that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This action endangers all other former Soviet republics, exposing them to potential Russian aggression.

Based on the summary of the conversation between Sir Keir and Mr. Zelenskyy, there's no indication that they talked about the overnight missile attack on the Chernobyl nuclear facility.

European Parliament Condemns Human Rights Violations in Türkiye, Nicaragua, and Nigeria: Calls for Immediate Reforms and Sanctions

Published

Human Rights Violations in Türkiye, Nicaragua, and Nigeria

Spread the word:

The European Parliament passed resolutions addressing human rights issues in Türkiye, Nicaragua, and Nigeria on Thursday.

Concerns are mounting among Members of the European Parliament over Türkiye's apparent neglect of democratic principles and the rule of law, particularly highlighted by the situations involving mayors Mehmet Sıddık Akış and Abdullah Zeydan. There is significant apprehension regarding the Turkish government's actions, which include the replacement of mayors who were elected by popular vote with appointed trustees in areas with a large Kurdish population, thereby undermining core democratic values and fundamental rights.

Criticizing the unjust removal and jailing of elected mayors, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are insisting on their immediate freedom, exoneration, and return to office. They are pushing for judicial changes to eliminate the trustee system, especially considering how these breaches affect governance in Kurdish-majority regions, and emphasize the importance of restarting the Kurdish peace negotiations. MEPs remind that the European Union's financial aid to Turkey is contingent on the nation's adherence to the rule of law and fundamental rights. They urge the European Commission to contemplate sanctions against Turkish officials implicated in these violations, under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. The resolution was passed by a show of hands, with the complete details to be published on February 13, 2025.

The repression by the Ortega-Murillo government in Nicaragua, aimed at human rights advocates, political adversaries, and religious groups, is strongly criticized by Parliament. MEPs condemn the regime's widespread human rights abuses against Nicaraguans and its targeting of religious figures. They denounce the use of forced exile against dissenters and demand the regime honor the right to oppose. The swift release of unjustly detained individuals and the reinstatement of the rule of law, along with assurances of human rights observance, are crucial for any dialogue and the allocation of EU funds, according to MEPs. They also urge the regime to revoke constitutional changes and oppressive laws to comply with international human rights commitments. Member states should initiate investigations through the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and sanction Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo, and their associates, MEPs assert. This resolution was also adopted by a show of hands, with the full text available on February 13, 2025.

In Nigeria, the continued detention and potential death sentences for people accused of blasphemy, particularly Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, are a concern for MEPs. They call on Nigerian authorities to protect human rights and religious freedom by freeing Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a singer accused of blasphemy, along with others facing similar charges. MEPs criticize blasphemy laws as breaches of international law and Nigerian constitutional rights, emphasizing the need to uphold human rights nationwide and align federal and Sharia laws with human rights standards, including removing criminal law provisions on religious insults. Parliament also urges Nigeria to eliminate the death penalty entirely. The resolution stresses Nigeria's need to address false blasphemy claims and mob violence, ensuring justice for offenders. This resolution was passed by a show of hands, with the full version to be released on February 13, 2025.

MEPs Demand Suspension of EU-Rwanda Deal Amid Rising Tensions and Humanitarian Crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Published

on

By

European lawmakers are calling for a halt to the EU-Rwanda agreement concerning sustainable value chains for essential raw materials. They demand that the Rwandan authorities pull their military forces out of the Democratic Republic of Congo and stop collaborating with the M23 rebel group, according to the Parliament.

In a decision made on Thursday, February 13, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) sharply criticized the takeover of Goma and surrounding areas in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo by M23 rebels and Rwandan military forces, labeling it as an unacceptable violation of the DRC's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Members of the European Parliament strongly criticize the widespread attacks that use explosive weapons, as well as illegal acts such as murder, sexual violence, and other likely war crimes occurring in the densely populated regions of North Kivu by all involved factions. They express their condemnation of practices such as forced labor, coerced recruitment, and other forms of abuse carried out by M23 with backing from Rwanda's military, along with similar actions by the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC).

Severe humanitarian crisis

Parliament demands a swift halt to the ongoing violence, especially the widespread killings and the deliberate use of rape as a tactic in warfare. It calls on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda to conduct thorough investigations and bring those guilty of war crimes, including acts of sexual violence, to justice, adhering to the principle of command responsibility. Members of the European Parliament also emphasize that assaults on forces operating under a United Nations mandate are indefensible and could be classified as war crimes.

Members of the European Parliament have expressed deep worry over the dire humanitarian crisis in the nation. They are calling for the swift reopening of Goma airport and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to resume aid activities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

EU Memorandum of Understanding with Rwanda Put on Hold Immediately

Lawmakers express disappointment over the European Union's inability to implement effective actions to tackle the crisis and compel Rwanda to withdraw its backing of M23. They call on the European Commission and the Council to promptly halt the EU's agreement on Sustainable Raw Materials Value Chains with Rwanda, until Rwanda stops all involvement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly the export of minerals from regions controlled by M23.

Members of the European Parliament urge the European Commission, EU member states, and global financial organizations to suspend direct financial aid to Rwanda until the country permits humanitarian entry into the crisis zone and severs all ties with the M23 group. Additionally, the European Commission and EU nations are advised to stop providing military and security aid to the Rwandan military to prevent any direct or indirect involvement in harmful military activities in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Members of the European Parliament are worried about the impact of Russian involvement in the ongoing conflict. Additionally, they are alarmed by the growing involvement of Chinese entities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's mining industry and the surrounding areas, where they appear to be operating without regard for economic and social accountability.

The Parliament has expressed approval for the peace summit jointly organized by SADC and EAC in Dar es Salaam on February 8. It has also pledged complete support for the peace efforts taking place in Luanda and Nairobi. Members of the European Parliament have urged all nations within the Great Lakes area, especially the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, to quickly engage in discussions based on these established frameworks.

Europäisches Parlament fordert Boykott gegen Georgiens selbsternannte Behörden und ruft zu Neuwahlen auf

Lawmakers Denounce Legitimacy of Georgia’s Self-Proclaimed Authorities

Share this page:

Parliamentarians urge the international community to join in rejecting the self-declared Georgian authorities, who they claim are undermining democracy in the country.

Following the controversial elections that plunged Georgia into a political and constitutional crisis, the country witnessed ongoing peaceful mass protests against the government. These demonstrations were met with a violent and repressive response from police and law enforcement agencies. Lawmakers are urging the Council and EU member states to impose personal sanctions on officials and political leaders in Georgia who are responsible for democratic backsliding, electoral fraud, human rights abuses, and the persecution of political opponents and activists. This includes notable figures such as the influential oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, as well as judges issuing politically motivated rulings and media personnel involved in spreading disinformation.

Call for New Elections

The resolution emphasizes that the only way to address the current crisis in Georgia is to hold new parliamentary elections under improved electoral conditions. Lawmakers believe these elections should occur in the coming months, overseen by an independent and impartial electoral commission and closely monitored by international observers. The parliament expresses deep regret that the ruling party, Georgian Dream, has abandoned its path toward European integration and NATO membership. It reaffirms its steadfast support for the legitimate European aspirations of the Georgian people.

The document received approval with 400 votes in favor, 63 against, and 81 abstentions. Comprehensive information will be accessible here on February 13, 2025. Discover how each member of parliament voted by checking here.

Background

EP President Metsola’s Historic Visit to Gaza: A Push for Peace and Humanitarian Aid in the Middle East

European Parliament Chief Metsola tours Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank

Share this page:

On her official trip to Israel and the Palestinian Territories under occupation, EP President Metsola became the first European head to visit Gaza in over ten years.

This Thursday and Friday, President Metsola is conducting an official trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories under occupation, engaging in discussions with political leaders there.

At this pivotal time for both the region and the globe, I felt it was important to visit in order to emphasize and observe Europe's essential involvement in delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza firsthand. Europe is prepared to enhance our efforts and contribute to ensuring the durability of the ceasefire and the release of hostages. This would pave the way for more aid and lay the groundwork for a lasting peace," stated President Metsola.

As part of her trip, the President is emphasizing Europe's readiness:

– to work collaboratively with every partner in the area,

– to guarantee the continuation of the present truce and agreement on hostages,

– and to establish a route towards lasting peace in the area that guarantees safety for Israel and offers genuine hope to the Palestinian population.

Schedule for the visit

On Thursday, the President held discussions in Jerusalem with Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Knesset, and Gideon Sa’ar, Israel's Foreign Minister. Additionally, she made a trip to the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing to observe the humanitarian work being conducted there.

President Metsola made history by becoming the first European leader in over ten years to visit Gaza. During her visit, she observed the delivery of humanitarian aid from the Israeli border. Her presence underscored the European Union's significant involvement in humanitarian assistance in Gaza, particularly through the EUBAM mission. Additionally, she emphasized the EU's dedication to facilitating the ceasefire and the exchange of hostages.

After coming back to Israel, President Metsola received an update from the European Union Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing (EUBAM Rafah) regarding their mission and the continuous work being done to facilitate humanitarian aid in Gaza.

She made a trip to the Nova Festival location in Re’im and is scheduled to have discussions with Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, later today.

On Friday, the President is scheduled to visit Ramallah for discussions with Palestinian leaders. She plans to hold talks with Mr. Hussein al-Sheikh, who serves as the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. Additionally, she will meet Ms. Reem Al Hajajra, the Director of Women of the Sun and a nominee for the 2024 Sakharov Prize.

Context

Lately, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has been concentrating on fostering stability and peace throughout the Middle East. Her efforts have included numerous meetings and calls with officials from Israel, Palestine, various Arab nations, and representatives from the United States. She has engaged in discussions in Cairo with Egypt's President, had a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II, welcomed the Palestinian Prime Minister to Brussels, and conversed with both Israel's Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

The President's trip follows increased involvement in advocating for a ceasefire and hostage agreement in Gaza, along with efforts to boost humanitarian aid.

On January 18, 2024, the European Parliament passed a resolution urging several key actions: the immediate freeing of all hostages, the disbandment of the terrorist group Hamas, the revival of the two-state solution, and the restart of the peace negotiations. This made them the first European body to officially make such demands.

Controversial Legal Loophole Allows Gaza Family Resettlement Under Ukraine Scheme: UK Leaders Vow Action

Published

on

By

What is the legal gap that permitted a Gaza family to relocate to the UK under a Ukrainian resettlement program?

Sir Keir Starmer has committed to sealing this gap, which hinges on a particular reading of the European Convention on Human Rights. This interpretation led a judge to rule that the absence of a similar resettlement program for Palestinians was "irrelevant".

Journalist specializing

Wednesday, February 12, 2025, 22:

Today in the House of Commons, there was considerable discussion about a "loophole" that enabled a Palestinian family to obtain permission to enter the UK through a resettlement scheme initially intended for Ukrainians.

The prime minister and the opposition leader both condemned a judge's ruling that permitted a family of six to enter the UK.

Sir Keir committed to sealing the "loophole" when questioned by Kemi Badenoch, though he did not provide further details on its nature.

Sky News has reviewed the decision made by Judge Hugo Norton-Taylor to grasp the details of the case.

Breaking News: Investigation into 'Leak' Initiated at the Treasury

What prompted the family to submit an application?

A couple and their four kids, who are 18, 17, eight, and seven years old, resided in Gaza. Their residence was demolished following the attacks on October 7 and the ensuing violence.

They ultimately resided in an area designated for humanitarian aid before moving to a refugee camp.

In January 2024, the family submitted an application through the Ukraine Family Scheme to relocate to the UK, where they aimed to reunite with a paternal uncle, a British citizen residing in the UK since 2007.

Despite knowing they didn't qualify for the Ukraine program, the family decided to apply, hoping to take advantage of the Home Office's policy regarding "applications for entry clearance outside the rules."

The Home Office denied the application, stating that they found no "compelling, compassionate circumstances" that would warrant an exception to the regulations.

They further pointed out the absence of a relocation plan for Palestinians.

The requests for

Despite assurances from the Home Office that there were no grounds for an appeal, the family proceeded to challenge the decision based on human rights considerations.

A magistrate subsequently determined that the original denial was a violation of human rights, thereby granting permission for an appeal.

This case involved an appeal based on Article Eight of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right to family life. It concerned a man residing in Britain and his family in Gaza.

The request was denied, citing the absence of a plan for Palestinian resettlement as a key factor.

A higher court has initiated a review, with one key contention being that the case should be evaluated based on its individual merits, rather than letting the absence of a Palestinian resettlement program dominate other considerations.

The Oversight

This is where the "gap" in the system seems to have emerged.

At this stage, Judge Norton-Taylor presided over the case and approved the appeal.

In his ruling, he asserted that considering the lack of a resettlement plan was entirely inappropriate.

The judge stated that he found "no evidence" to suggest that the Home Office intentionally chose not to proceed with a Palestinian resettlement plan.

He also pointed out that the absence of specific immigration policies regarding an issue should not be held against an individual.

Simply put, the debate suggests that the absence of a specific resettlement program does not imply that individuals are prohibited from entering the UK through humanitarian pathways.

The ruling stated that the lack of a "resettlement scheme" did not influence their decision.

What comes now?

Judge Norton-Taylor supported the family from Gaza's case, citing the European Convention on Human Rights and their right to family life with their relative in the UK.

A spokesperson from the Home Office stated: "The Ukraine Family scheme was explicitly designed for Ukrainians. We have consistently disagreed with this ruling and have robustly challenged it on two occasions.

"The prime minister emphasized that Article 8, which pertains to the right to family life, requires a stricter interpretation. The responsibility to determine the individuals eligible for the UK's protected and lawful pathways lies with the government and Parliament."

"We are exploring every legal option to tackle the oversight that has been taken advantage of in this situation. The home secretary is promptly examining the case to guarantee that proper procedures are consistently adhered to and current laws are accurately applied."

They further stated that there is no factual basis for the claim, pointing out that government figures indicate only a "very small" total of Gazans, approximately 150, have been permitted to enter the UK.

Sir Keir mentioned his intention to eliminate the loophole, though the specifics of his plan remain uncertain.
