The European Parliament commemorates European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, paying tribute to the Sinti and Roma who were killed during the Nazi occupation of Europe.
Today, the European Parliament stands with the global community to commemorate European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, honoring the 500,000 Sinti and Roma who endured horrific persecution under Nazi rule in Europe.
During the night of August 2-3, 1944, the final 4,300 Sinti and Roma individuals at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp were killed, predominantly consisting of women, children, and the elderly. Today, the European Parliament not only commemorates these atrocities against humanity but also underscores the necessity of raising awareness.
During this poignant event, the European Parliament reflects on the important lessons from the initial acknowledgment of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust and emphasizes that Romani individuals should receive equal rights and treatment as all other citizens of Europe.
Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, stated: "Today, we honor the contributions of the Roma and Sinti communities to the diverse tapestry of European societies. Europe must defend its core values: the rule of law, democracy, and equality. Becoming complacent risks repeating the mistakes of the past."
Eight decades on, numerous Romani individuals across Europe continue to exist on the fringes of society. President Metsola emphasized, "In our Europe, we value our differences, unique traditions, cultures, and diversity. This entails that Roma individuals should have the same opportunities and prospects as any other European citizen."
Starting in 2015, the European Parliament has commemorated the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day annually on August 2nd.
