Esteban Ocon’s F1 Future in Limbo as Carlos Sainz Weighs 2025 Options
"Esteban Ocon's Opportunities Appear Limited as He Awaits Carlos Sainz's Choice"
The future of Esteban Ocon in Formula 1 depends on the decision Carlos Sainz makes for the 2025 season.
According to Craig Slater from Sky, Esteban Ocon's future in Formula 1 hinges on Carlos Sainz's decision regarding his next team.
On Monday, Alpine revealed that they will be "separating" from Ocon when this season concludes.
Ocon joined the team in 2020 and achieved his first podium finish and race win during his time there.
It seems that Ocon has become increasingly frustrated with the team's poor performance and deteriorating relationships, especially following the incident with teammate Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix.
In a statement to Sky Sports News yesterday, Slater clarified that Ocon's exit is not related to his contentious maneuver against Gasly in Monaco.
Slater mentioned that, according to his information, the situation is unrelated. He believes the announcement of Ocon's departure at the end of the season might have been expedited a bit. Slater added that it's already known Ocon will be racing for the team in Canada this week, despite some earlier uncertainty.
The two had been competitors since they were young, and although their dynamic might not have been perfect, that's not why he’s leaving at the end of the year. His tenure with the team is concluding naturally after five years together.
Regarding Ocon's future prospects, he has been closely associated with Haas and Audi.
Nonetheless, the decision on which team it will be could ultimately rest with Sainz.
Sainz has been associated with both Audi and Williams, so if he opts for Williams, it would open the door for Ocon to team up with Nico Hulkenberg at Audi.
According to Slater, Ocon's most promising option at the moment seems to be Haas, although he is up against Valtteri Bottas for the position.
"It's challenging for Ocon,” Slater mentioned. He is partially managed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. If Wolff had intended to place him in Hamilton's seat, it would have occurred by now. That scenario is unlikely. Currently, most opportunities appear unavailable for Esteban Ocon.
Could he possibly be considered for the Audi seat, which is presently with Sauber? Carlos Sainz has received a proposal but is undecided between accepting it or potentially joining Williams, which has recently become a strong candidate for securing Sainz. His decision will influence other teams as it could make the Audi or Williams seat available. I think he doesn't have an offer from Williams.
Currently, Haas represents the most probable opportunity for Ocon to remain in Formula 1. He is among several drivers being considered for a spot on the team. It is highly likely that British teenager Oliver Bearman will join Haas next year, as Nico Hulkenberg is set to depart for Sauber and Audi.
This would result in choices between Valtteri Bottas, current driver Kevin Magnussen, or Esteban Ocon. Alternatively, competing in the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans could be considered.
