Esteban Ocon’s F1 Future Hangs in the Balance as Carlos Sainz Weighs 2025 Options
Esteban Ocon's prospects in Formula 1 hinge on Carlos Sainz's choice for the 2025 season, leaving Ocon in a state of uncertainty as he waits for Sainz to decide.
According to Craig Slater from Sky, Esteban Ocon's future in Formula 1 is dependent on Carlos Sainz's decision about which team he will join.
On Monday, Alpine revealed that Ocon will be leaving the team after the current season concludes.
Ocon joined the team in 2020, achieving his inaugural podium finish and his first win during his time there.
It seems that Ocon has become increasingly upset due to their poor performance and deteriorating relationships, especially following the incident with teammate Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix.
Slater stated on Sky Sports News yesterday that Ocon’s exit has no connection to his contentious maneuver against Gasly in Monte Carlo.
"I've been informed it's unrelated," Slater mentioned. "This situation was inevitable. Perhaps it expedited the news that Ocon will be departing from the team after this season. It's already known that he will be racing for the team in Canada this week, despite some earlier uncertainties."
The two had been competitors since they were children, and while their dynamic might not have been perfect, that isn't why he's leaving at the end of the year. His time with the team has simply run its course after five years together.
Regarding Ocon's prospects, he has been closely associated with both Haas and Audi.
Nonetheless, the choice of the team may ultimately depend on Sainz.
Sainz has been associated with both Audi and Williams. Should he opt to join Williams, it could pave the way for Ocon to team up with Nico Hulkenberg at Audi.
Slater thinks that Haas is Ocon's top option at the moment, but he will have to contend with Valtteri Bottas.
Slater commented on Ocon's challenging situation, noting that despite being partly managed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, Ocon would have already replaced Lewis Hamilton if that had been Wolff's intention. Currently, it appears that there are limited opportunities available for Esteban Ocon.
Is there a possibility that he might compete for the Audi seat, which is now held by Sauber? Carlos Sainz has an offer, but he's torn between accepting it or potentially moving to Williams. Recently, Williams has become a strong candidate for securing Sainz's contract. His decision will subsequently influence the choices of other teams, potentially opening up opportunities at Audi or Williams. However, I don't think he has a viable option at Williams.
Haas currently appears to be Esteban Ocon's best opportunity to remain in Formula 1. He is among several drivers being considered for a spot on the team. It is highly probable that young British driver Oliver Bearman will race for Haas next season, as Nico Hulkenberg is set to depart for Sauber and Audi.
This would mean that the remaining options are Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, or Esteban Ocon. If none of them are chosen, then the alternative would be competing in the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans.
