Emotional Homecoming: Lando Norris Misses ‘Psychological Present’ in Pivotal British Grand Prix Pit Stop
‘Psychological reward’ missed by Lando Norris for mechanics
“It’s challenging, but if you can show the car to the team…"
Lando Norris was informed that his mechanics missed out on a "psychological gift" when he overshot his pit stop during the British Grand Prix in Formula 1.
McLaren's Norris was clearly upset after failing to turn a strong start into a win at his home Grand Prix.
A delayed pit stop followed by an ineffective tyre strategy allowed Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton to secure the victory.
Former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber mentioned to Channel 4 that the race had its ups and downs. He explained that there were moments when you felt confident, but soon after, you found yourself falling back towards other competitors.
"He will be unhappy with the choice of tyres and the extended pit stop."
"It's challenging, but if you can showcase the car to the team, that's a major psychological boost for them. Being under pressure at the British Grand Prix, they will strive to do their best for him."
"When you push through, it's extremely difficult. At that moment, he was at a disadvantage."
"He will think about it. And he will, because he is exceptional."
Channel 4’s Lee McKenzie commented, “We all have a realistic perspective. He should have secured a victory, or at the very least finished in second place. He deserved to win in Austria.”
"I sense his frustration. I'm certain McLaren is feeling let down as well. I'm puzzled as to why they didn't perform a double stack; perhaps they lacked the assurance to do so."
“He was supposed to come first in that race.”
After finishing third in the race at Silverstone, Norris expressed his deep disappointment, stating, "We lost our chance during the final pit stop."
"Therefore, it was just a single lap, but in my opinion, it wasn't even a complete lap. Even if I had returned to the pits on the ideal lap, choosing to switch to the soft tires was a mistake."
"I believe Lewis would have emerged victorious regardless. Therefore, two decisions on our end led to our complete downfall today. It's quite, particularly in this context, very disheartening."
