Emotional Hamilton Reflects on ‘Surreal’ Antonelli Promotion as Mercedes F1 Era Nears End
Lewis Hamilton has confessed that he felt "very surreal" emotions upon hearing the news of Andrea Kimi Antonelli's promotion within Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton described the experience as "very surreal" upon hearing that Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been officially announced as his successor at Mercedes for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
On Saturday morning, Mercedes revealed that their promising 18-year-old talent, Antonelli, will replace Hamilton next year when the seven-time world champion makes a sensational move to Ferrari.
Hamilton, who surprised the Formula 1 community with the announcement of his transfer to Ferrari in February, revealed that he has been aware for a long time that Antonelli would be his successor. However, he confessed that witnessing the final confirmation was still "quite emotional" for him.
Hamilton remarked regarding Antonelli's confirmation, "I've been aware for a long time. However, this morning, knowing it would be officially announced, I woke up feeling like it was all very surreal."
"It was emotional for me this morning when I received the official confirmation that my seat is being taken away, especially after holding on to it for such a long time."
"Extremely pleased for Kimi and the team. I am confident that Kimi will excel in his role."
When questioned about whether emotions are intensifying as he approaches his departure from Mercedes, Hamilton responded, "I've felt it all year. At every race, I've shown up with immense love for my team, and we've endured a lot together."
"Every race is going to be filled with emotion, because each one marks the final time I'll compete at that specific track. As we move forward, each race brings me closer to my last moment with Mercedes, and that's undeniably challenging."
"My main goal at the moment is to perform as well as possible for the team and end the season on a positive note. I need to rediscover my form for the qualifying sessions. My performance during the races is strong; I just need to find a way to return to my previous level."
Hamilton felt extremely disappointed with his qualifying results at the Italian Grand Prix, as he secured the sixth spot on the starting grid for Sunday's race, trailing three positions behind his teammate George Russell.
In an interview with Sky following the qualifying session, Hamilton expressed that Mercedes merited a stronger performance than what he delivered at Monza. He jokingly added, "maybe they'll achieve that with Kimi."
