Emily Thornberry has been excluded from Labour's latest government lineup, despite having been a part of its shadow cabinet for over eight years.
The representative for Islington South and Finsbury most recently served as Sir Keir Starmer's shadow attorney general, following a stint as his shadow international trade secretary for approximately 18 months subsequent to his victory in the 2020 leadership race.
Rather than transitioning to a government role like many shadow ministers, the Prime Minister has chosen Richard Hermer KC, a human rights attorney, to serve as attorney general. Since he is not a Member of Parliament, he will have to be appointed to the House of Lords to fulfill this position.

On the social media platform X, Ms. Thornberry, a 2020 leadership contender herself, expressed her regret and astonishment at the recent decision. Despite her personal letdown, she emphasized that it would not overshadow Labour's remarkable and historic triumph in the previous week's general election.
In her statement, she expressed: "Having served continuously in the shadow cabinet for over eight years, more than any of my contemporaries during this period, I have consistently strived to maintain unity within the Labour Party, support our representatives nationwide, challenge the Conservatives robustly, and present a compelling vision to the citizens of the UK regarding our alternative policies…
"I regret and am shocked that I cannot carry on with my duties in the government, yet I extend my best wishes to all my exceptional colleagues. I am confident that Richard Hermer KC, whose legal expertise far surpasses mine, will excel in his role as attorney general."

Having served under Sir Keir for a considerable period, Ms. Thornberry is more famously recognized for her alignment with Labour's left faction, where she was a prominent supporter of Jeremy Corbyn throughout his leadership.
During Mr. Corbyn's leadership, she held the roles of shadow defence secretary and shadow foreign secretary, having been reinstated to a prominent position after she stepped down as shadow attorney general in 2014 due to a controversy involving a social media post about the St George's flag.
