Eddie Jordan Casts Doubt on Mercedes’ Decision to Promote Kimi Antonelli Directly to F1: Calls for a More Gradual Approach
Eddie Jordan expresses doubts about Mercedes, citing a lack of "complete confidence" in Kimi Antonelli.
"Currently, I'm not convinced Antonelli has proven himself worthy of the position. He hasn't instilled in me that sense of absolute trust."
Eddie Jordan is of the opinion that Mercedes would have been better off assigning Andrea Kimi Antonelli to a midfield team instead of directly elevating him to fill Lewis Hamilton's seat for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
During the weekend of the Italian Grand Prix, it was revealed that Antonelli would join Mercedes as a driver, partnering with George Russell for the upcoming season.
This verdict ensures that Antonelli will embark on his Formula 1 career in 2025 at the tender age of 18, presenting him with the chance to possibly emerge as the youngest victor in the history of the sport as the new season commences.
Mercedes explored alternatives with seasoned racers, like Carlos Sainz, and also paused to learn about Max Verstappen’s career plans before deciding on Antonelli.
During the most recent installment of the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan, who previously owned the Jordan GP F1 team, raised doubts about Mercedes' choice concerning Antonelli.
Jordan commented, "We've consistently maintained that the intensity from Mercedes would overwhelm Kimi during his initial debut and first race."
The situation unfolded as it did. He lost control, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle. I maintain that there is a spot for Kimi, just not within Mercedes – that's the argument I'm putting forward. His speed doesn't concern me.
"In my opinion, he should be positioned in a setting that allows both Toto and the team to spend the year gaining knowledge and advancing from there."
Co-presenter David Coulthard mentioned Verstappen's journey in F1, beginning with Toro Rosso in 2015, followed by a transition to Red Bull.
Jordan proposed that Mercedes could have adopted a comparable strategy with Antonelli.
Jordan concurred, stating, "This is precisely the outcome we anticipate. Max originated from Toro Rosso. In our view, Kimi Antonelli belongs at Williams, a team where Toto has influence over placements. It's a sentiment we've expressed for a long time."
Recall the advice Bernie Ecclestone frequently offered when pursuing financial support or any desired object. His mantra was simple: ‘earn the right’. His guidance was to ‘Earn the right to make the request’.
Currently, I'm not convinced Antonelli has justified his position, not just yet. He hasn't instilled in me a complete sense of confidence. My apologies, everyone.
