Die Evolution des Rennsport-Klassikers: Porsche 911 GT3 (2025) – Facelift ohne Mehrleistung, aber voller Neuerungen

Published

on

The 2025 iteration of the Porsche 911 GT3 is set to debut without an increase in horsepower, yet it boasts numerous engine enhancements, the debut of the Weissach Package, a brand new premium seat option, and a significant price hike. As the Porsche 911 Turbo celebrates its 50th anniversary, another legend within the brand, the 911 GT3, marks its own milestone of 25 years since its inception. Time indeed flies, as it was in 1999 that the 996 GT3 was first introduced. Now, a quarter of a century later, Porsche is unveiling the eighth generation of this celebrated model. Introducing the 992.2 GT3.

Enthusiasts often view facelifts as the launch of a new model generation, typically due to the significant changes that accompany these updates. However, the latest refresh of the model doesn't seem to offer much change at first glance. For the first time in the history of the 911 GT3, a product enhancement does not include an increase in power. But don't be misled; rest assured that Andreas Preuninger, the undisputed master of GT models, along with his team, have been incredibly industrious. We're here to tell you about all the updates that have been made to the 992.2 GT3.

Drive

As expected, the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter boxer engine is retained. However, what's peculiar is that it produces the same 510 horsepower as before but with a slight decrease in torque, now at 450 Nm, which is 20 Nm less. You might guess the reason: obviously, the increasingly strict emission regulations are to blame. The fact that the performance has been maintained at almost the same level is quite an achievement.

The latest version of the engine now features two particle filters and four catalytic converters. Porsche has claimed that despite these additions, they've managed to maintain "an emotionally resonant sound." The updates on this engine, which is known for its 9,000 rpm capability, include redesigned cylinder heads and more aggressive camshafts borrowed from the 911 GT3 RS. These tweaks aim to enhance the engine's dynamic power delivery at higher revs. Furthermore, the engine now incorporates individually optimized throttle valves for improved airflow and enhanced oil coolers for better temperature management.

The best-case power-to-weight ratio is 2.8 kg per horsepower. Additionally, both the 7-speed PDK and 6-speed manual transmission feature an axle ratio that is 8 percent shorter than their predecessor. The updated 911 GT3 accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds with the PDK and can reach a top speed of 311 km/h. With the manual transmission, it takes 3.9 seconds to hit 100 km/h and the top speed is slightly higher at 313 km/h. A lap time around the Nürburgring North Loop is expected to be announced, considering the current GT3 completed the 20.8-kilometer circuit in 6:59 minutes.

Handling/Lightweight Design

The major headline for the 992 GT3 at the start of 2021 was the debut of a double-wishbone front suspension, which notably enhanced the steering response. Since then, aerodynamically designed trailing arms with a teardrop profile have also been included, which enhance downforce within the wheel arch and optimize brake cooling at high speeds.

To maintain the downforce balance between the front and rear axles even when braking from high speeds, the pitching (antidive) is now reduced. This is achieved by lowering the position of the front ball joint on the lower longitudinal control arm, similar to what is done in the current GT3 RS.

Moreover, the company has reportedly enhanced the wet grip of the standard sports tires (255/35 ZR20 front, 315/30 ZR21 rear). There is also the option to equip the car with track-ready tires that are legal for road use. Additionally, the engineers have refined the tuning of the shock absorbers and made further adjustments to the steering, which seems to have received the seal of approval from motorsport icon and brand ambassador Walter Röhrl.

"He notes the steering has been significantly improved from the previous model, especially noticeable on winding country roads," he comments. "It provides a greater sense of confidence in the vehicle due to its steadier response starting from the central position, while maintaining its sharpness. The shorter transmission ratio also greatly enhances the driving enjoyment on country roads."

Porsche is emphasizing weight reduction in the updated 911 GT3, including the introduction of a new silver aluminum wheel that saves approximately 1.5 kilograms overall. Customers who opt for the Weissach package or the lightweight package can, for additional cost, upgrade to magnesium wheels that reduce the weight by nine kilograms. Additionally, a new 40-Ah lithium-ion lightweight battery contributes to a further four-kilogram weight decrease. According to the manufacturer, the new 911 GT3 weighs 1,420 kilograms in its lightest configuration.

Exterior/Interior

The refreshed 911 GT3 stands out with its revised front and rear sections. Enhanced downforce and improved airflow are achieved through a redesigned front diffuser contour, reformed front lip, and updated fins on the underbody. The newly designed Matrix LED main headlights are now available with an optional white accent ring. These lights consolidate all the lighting functions of the 911, eliminating the need for additional lights in the front bumper. At the rear, the diffuser, air intakes, and engine cover have been reworked. The rear wing of the 911 GT3 now features newly angled side plates.

We've visually prepared everything for you. On the left, you'll find the previous model, and on the right, the latest GT3:

Inside the car, the most significant news is the introduction of an optional lightweight sport bucket seat, which features a foldable backrest and a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic seat shell. This sleek seat is equipped with a thorax airbag, electric height adjustment, and manual longitudinal adjustment. For added comfort, a three-level seat heating system is available as an option. Additionally, part of the headrest padding can be removed, which is convenient for those wearing helmets.

The cockpit layout has been updated to mirror the recently revamped 911 Carrera, with the fortunate exception of the new start button not making it into the GT3. The feature known as the "Track-Screen" simplifies the digital displays flanking the tachometer, focusing on tire, oil, water, and fuel data, and includes a shift indicator light. Additionally, the tachometer display can be customized so that the 9,000 rpm mark lines up with the 12 o'clock position if the driver so chooses.

The GT3 now comes with a Touring Package, which is great news for those who aren't fans of rear spoilers. This package is available right from the launch and is even more distinguishable than before. In case the absence of a wing isn't obvious enough, there's a new "911 GT3 touring" badge on the rear lid's grille. An extendable rear spoiler with a Gurney flap and a redesigned fin pattern on the underbody ensure aerodynamic equilibrium. The addition of a rear seat, a first for this model, enhances the Touring's practicality for everyday use.

New Equipment Bundles

The Weissach Package makes its debut in the world of GT3, enhancing the racing track performance and atmosphere to new levels.

The car's rear axle stabilizer, connecting rods, and thrust panel are all made from carbon fiber composite, as are the roof, rear wing side plates, upper part of the exterior mirrors, mirror triangle, and front airblades. Additionally, the interior is enhanced with an increased presence of leather and Race-Tex material. Customers also have the option to add a carbon fiber roll cage and the previously mentioned forged magnesium wheels.

Porsche offers a lightweight package option for the 911 GT3 Touring. This package includes a roof painted in the same color as the car and components such as the stabilizer, coupling rods, and rear axle thrust panel made from carbon fiber. Additionally, it features magnesium wheels and lightweight door panels. Those who opt for the manual transmission will also benefit from a shorter gear shift lever, originally from the 911 S/T, accompanied by a "lightweight" badge positioned right in front of it.

The Clubsport package, which comes at no additional cost for the 911 GT3 featuring a rear wing, includes a bolted steel roll cage in the back, a six-point safety harness for the driver, and a handheld fire extinguisher.

Prices

The latest Porsche 911 GT3 and its variant with the Touring package will be available for order at the year's end, starting at a cost of 209,000 euros. This marks a steep increase in price by 15,600 euros compared to its predecessor. The Weissach package is priced at 18,076 euros, while the option for a Lightweight package comes in at 33,867 euros.
