Defiance in the Paddock: Oscar Piastri Stands Firm Amid McLaren Rear Wing Controversy
Oscar Piastri stands firm on McLaren's rear wing legality amidst F1 controversy
Oscar Piastri asserts that McLaren's rear wing complies with regulations as debates over flexible wings continue in Formula 1.
Oscar Piastri asserts that McLaren's rear wing complies with regulations and rejects claims that it is the sole reason for the team's recent Formula 1 achievements.
A new dispute erupted concerning Formula 1's flexible wing issue just before the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, as questions arose about McLaren's rear wing design after Piastri's victory in Baku.
TV coverage from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend seemed to capture the McLaren's rear wing bending upwards while on the straight.
The FIA, which oversees Formula 1, announced that they are examining data and any new information from the Baku Grand Prix. They are also contemplating any preventive actions that could be applied in the future.
This development follows only a few weeks after McLaren's front wing was inspected and the team was found innocent of any violations, despite concerns from competitors like Red Bull and Ferrari about possible flexing.
During Thursday’s press conference in Singapore, Piastri firmly addressed inquiries regarding McLaren’s rear wing, asserting with confidence, "Well, it complies with the regulations."
"As long as it meets all the requirements – and we undergo frequent evaluations, it does meet them, so it's definitely not the sole reason for our competitiveness."
"It complies with the law and meets all the requirements, so I am quite satisfied with it."
The Australian stated, "Honestly, I found out it worked that way at the same time as everyone else last week. There's no ambiguity about it."
"It undergoes weekly testing, complies with regulations, and there are numerous tests available for the rear wings now. To be honest, I wasn't aware of that until three days ago."
"In sports, it's crucial to maximize performance within the boundaries of the rules. This approach is essential for building a championship-winning car and team, and that's exactly what we're focusing on."
McLaren overtook Red Bull to take the lead in the constructors’ championship for the first time in ten years after securing their fourth win of 2024 in Baku.
The British team, aiming for their first constructors' championship victory since 1998, holds a 20-point lead over Red Bull with seven races left in the season.
