Decision Time for Carlos Sainz: Weighing Williams Against Sauber/Audi After Red Bull Snub
Carlos Sainz faces a choice between two Formula 1 teams for 2025 after being overlooked by Red Bull.
Carlos Sainz is reportedly now deciding between joining Williams or Sauber/Audi for the 2025 Formula 1 season after not securing a position with Red Bull.
Red Bull has officially announced that Sergio Perez's contract has been extended for another two years, just before the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. This development further limits options for Carlos Sainz, who is on the lookout for a new team for the 2025 season after Lewis Hamilton replaced him at Ferrari.
It was thought that Sainz was holding off on making a decision until he was certain that there was no chance of a spot at Red Bull. Only then would he commit to joining either the Williams team or the Sauber/Audi project, as sources indicate that both teams had extended offers to the Spanish driver.
Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft predicts that Sainz will eventually join Williams.
James Vowles, the team principal at Williams, is an extremely motivating individual. He has a clear plan and understands that results won't come instantaneously. According to Croft on the newest Sky Sports F1 podcast episode, Vowles is offering a vision to believe in.
"He convinced Alex Albon with a vision, who also holds high hopes for the Mercedes engine set for 2026. And as for acquiring Sainz, the response is a definite 'yes, he can'."
"I've been in touch with Sainz's representatives regarding this matter; he is faced with a choice between Audi and Williams."
Audi has not set a deadline. Previous reports suggesting otherwise are incorrect; there was no requirement for a decision by the end of May. The issue isn't financial. The key factor is Carlos's perspective on the future direction.
"Do you trust a new initiative from Audi, a company with a proven track record in global motorsport but no experience in Formula 1? Or do you rely on Williams, a team with a history of success in F1 but has struggled significantly in recent years?"
"Speaking honestly, I believe he will join Williams."
Carlos Sainz is likely moving in that direction because he understands the opportunities available with Williams. Currently, the future with Audi isn't clear to him as there's limited information to consider.
"They haven't assumed control at Sauber; their involvement is limited to producing power units. If James Vowles manages to secure him, it would be a significant achievement and an excellent addition to the driver roster, potentially strengthening the team for many years ahead."
Mercedes, searching for a successor to seven-time world champion Hamilton, are reportedly considering advancing their highly acclaimed Formula 2 talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, directly to their main team for the upcoming season.
Sky F1 host Simon Lazenby, who was part of the discussion, said: "I don't believe Mercedes is considering Sainz, so it really comes down to a choice between Sauber/Audi and Williams."
"Currently, the argument in favor of Williams is based on their performance, especially when compared to Sauber's track record. Although Sauber has a significant journey ahead, Williams presents a compelling option for him right now."
