Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes After Fiery Clash with Nico Hulkenberg at Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident involving Haas during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were competing in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but he experienced a collision. This led to Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt, allowing his teammate Kevin Magnussen to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at his pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race at his home circuit for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
“In the end, we didn’t have enough speed today, even if you disregard the penalties,” he mentioned.
"We gave it a go, and I was really liking the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and realized I misjudged the space between us. I felt the collision and understood I hadn't given him enough room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car seemed fine afterward, and we gave it everything we had. I was aiming to extract the most performance from the car from Friday afternoon until today."
"In my opinion, I felt much better this weekend, and we nearly managed to earn some points."
Tsunoda 'frustrated' after race
RB’s performance in the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, says team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I'm quite frustrated; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, leading to a loss of control and a collision with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained on the undercarriage."
“I sensed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn’t control it.”
"With races in Baku and Singapore coming up, our car is expected to do well, so we are optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important time on the track with the updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, after which Nico collided with Yuki, resulting in us having to withdraw the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki’s retirement is missing out on those 40 laps that could have given us more insight into the new updates we implemented."
"Daniel was handed an additional 10-second penalty as the initial one was not properly carried out."
"We must reassess our methods in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding overall this season."
