Daniel Ricciardo comments on incident with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to collision with Haas at the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he had offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo found himself in a tussle with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the field, leading to a collision between the two at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt, allowing his team-mate Kevin Magnussen to overtake.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second time penalty for the incident. However, he eventually had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with the car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult home race for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"At the end of the day, our speed wasn't sufficient today, even disregarding the penalties," he remarked.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and explained that I believed there was enough space between us. However, I felt the impact, so I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room. I then apologized to him."
“It’s challenging because you push yourself to the limit, yet even the tiniest differences can be significant.
"The car performed well, and we gave it everything we had. I was striving to get the best possible performance from the car from Friday afternoon up until today."
"From my perspective, I'm feeling much better this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda Expresses Disappointment
Red Bull's performance at the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg, according to team representative Laurent Mekies. A collision involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I feel quite frustrated; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
“I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was swerving, and I just couldn't control it.
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to perform well. We are optimistic about having successful weekends at both locations."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important track time with the new RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Following that, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most exasperating part about Yuki’s retirement is that it cost us 40 laps, which would have helped us better grasp the updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to improper execution of the initial one."
"We must reassess our protocols in this situation and gain insights from today's error. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has largely been outstanding this season."
