Damon Hill Warns Sergio Perez: Red Bull’s History Shows No Seat is Safe
Damon Hill cautions Sergio Perez about his future with Red Bull F1, citing past instances. He mentioned that there have been situations previously, whether it was with Gasly or Albon, where a decision was made but then rapidly altered.
Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 world champion, has cautioned Sergio Perez that even though he has kept his position with Red Bull past the summer break, his future with the team might still be uncertain.
Following an intense meeting last Monday after the Belgian Grand Prix, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko concluded that Perez will continue to race alongside Max Verstappen for the foreseeable future.
Perez has been struggling lately, managing to earn only 28 points over the past eight races.
His performance has put Red Bull in a precarious position in the constructors’ championship.
Perez will keep his position for the time being, but Red Bull will have another chance to switch him out during the second break following the Singapore Grand Prix.
During an appearance on the F1 Nation Podcast, Hill mentioned the periods Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly spent with the team, noting how both drivers received public support prior to being substituted.
Hill mentioned that they should concentrate more on Checo and identify the issue so that he can maximize the car's performance.
"He can gain self-assurance or whatever it might be. The team relies on him and cannot replace him with a different driver."
"In the past, there have been instances where they made an announcement, whether it was Gasly or Albon, and then everything changed abruptly."
"Events do occur. They might decide to accept the loss and acknowledge, 'we're going to forfeit the constructors' championship, but how much does that cost us financially?' If we invest a few million dollars to move elsewhere, it could be beneficial in the long term."
Red Bull holds a narrow lead of 42 points over McLaren as they approach the Dutch Grand Prix later this month.
Perez has not secured a top-three finish at Zandvoort in any of his last three races with Red Bull.
