Crushing Blow for Mick Schumacher: Alpine’s Choice of Jack Doohan May End F1 Dreams
Devastating setback for Mick Schumacher – is his Formula 1 dream permanently dashed?
Alpine's decision to select Jack Doohan has effectively closed the F1 opportunity for Mick Schumacher.
Mick Schumacher appears to have been passed over for the open position at Alpine, which might mean the end of his Formula 1 aspirations.
Michael Schumacher's son has now gone two years without a full-time position as a race driver.
He spent a couple of years in Formula 1 racing for Haas, but his tenure ended when team principal Guenther Steiner decided to let him go, citing the high number of accidents he was involved in.
Schumacher took on the role of the third driver at Mercedes, the same team where his father concluded his Formula 1 career. This year, he also took on additional duties with Alpine.
Schumacher's potential comeback to Formula 1 may have been accelerated by his recent partnership with Alpine. However, during the F1 Dutch Grand Prix on Friday, the team announced that newcomer Jack Doohan will take their open seat in 2025.
This development represents a significant hindrance to Schumacher’s hopes of making a comeback.
This season, he has competed for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, taking part in events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
He tried out their 2022 Formula 1 vehicle at the Paul Ricard Track ahead of the latest British Grand Prix.
At Paul Ricard, Doohan unexpectedly teamed up with Schumacher.
The 21-year-old Australian, who is the son of famous motorcycle champion Mick Doohan, was eventually chosen by Alpine over Schumacher.
Alpine had earlier stated their plan to thoroughly evaluate Schumacher while deciding on their driver lineup for the 2025 F1 season, although he was just one of multiple candidates.
Carlos Sainz, who is leaving Ferrari to join Williams, was apparently considered as a potential candidate.
Schumacher has been denied a chance for a third season.
Open seats in the racing teams include the Mercedes position, which is expected to be filled by Kimi Antonelli, and Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull spot. Ricciardo, the experienced Australian driver, still aims to retain his place despite facing competition from Liam Lawson.
Schumacher might be able to generate enthusiasm at Audi, which will operate under the Sauber name next year.
The German industrial powerhouse has brought on Nico Hulkenberg as a driver based in Germany for their latest initiative.
As they look for a partner for Hulkenberg, the prestige that Schumacher continues to hold might offer him another opportunity to return to Formula 1.
