Controversy Erupts as Kevin Magnussen Slams Stewards Over Race Ban: ‘I Don’t Understand the Rules
Furious Kevin Magnussen faces a race suspension: “I’m confused about the regulations”
“It was just minor contact, and we went off track. What’s the big deal?”
Kevin Magnussen has expressed his disagreement with the stewards' ruling that resulted in a penalty and a subsequent race ban for him at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
The Haas team’s driver is the first Formula 1 competitor to receive a one-race suspension since Romain Grosjean in 2012 because he has amassed too many penalty points on his license.
He received a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points for colliding with Pierre Gasly from Alpine at the Monaco race, which raised his total to 12 points.
As a consequence, Magnussen will not participate in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Speaking to Sky Sports in an angry tone, he said, "Gasly and I had a minor collision. "Neither car was damaged, and it didn't affect the race in any way…"
"We had a minor collision and failed to make the turn. It's no big deal; we were in the middle of a race."
"I don't understand why we have to impose such penalties."
"Additionally, I witnessed [teammate Nico Hulkenberg] nearly being forced into the wall at a speed of 300 km/h by Daniel Ricciardo."
"I'm not accusing him of doing it intentionally, but he received a five-second penalty while I got a ten-second one. It just doesn't make sense."
Prior to the announcement of the decision, he asserted that the possibility of being banned from the race did not concern him.
Magnussen was questioned about whether he would go to the stewards to present his perspective.
“It typically doesn’t make a difference or alter anything,” he mentioned.
“I’ve had numerous conversations with them, yet I remain unclear about the rules.”
In my opinion, it appears that they are not interested in racing.
"If the situation involving Gasly and me can't be classified as a racing incident, then I'm not sure what would qualify."
“It’s illogical.”
Penalty severity under review
Karun Chandhok examined the clash between Magnussen and Gasly.
Chandhok commented on Sky Sports that Magnussen was drafting closely behind as he maneuvered through Curva Grande.
"He loses control and begins to skid into the side of Gasly's vehicle."
“Gasly went through the escape route, while Magnussen drove over the curb.
"Just as Kevin mentioned, both of them continued."
“The officials made the correct decision to penalize him, but I have doubts regarding the justification for the two penalty points.”
"He makes a legitimate argument; Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were present, and the gap was five seconds, not ten."
"He deserved to be penalized, but the severity of the punishment is something that should be discussed."
