At this pivotal time for both the region and the globe, I felt it was important to visit in order to emphasize and observe Europe's essential involvement in delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza firsthand. Europe is prepared to enhance our efforts and contribute to ensuring the durability of the ceasefire and the release of hostages. This would pave the way for more aid and lay the groundwork for a lasting peace," stated President Metsola.

As part of her trip, the President is emphasizing Europe's readiness:

– to work collaboratively with every partner in the area,

– to guarantee the continuation of the present truce and agreement on hostages,

– and to establish a route towards lasting peace in the area that guarantees safety for Israel and offers genuine hope to the Palestinian population.

Schedule for the visit

On Thursday, the President held discussions in Jerusalem with Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Knesset, and Gideon Sa’ar, Israel's Foreign Minister. Additionally, she made a trip to the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing to observe the humanitarian work being conducted there.

President Metsola made history by becoming the first European leader in over ten years to visit Gaza. During her visit, she observed the delivery of humanitarian aid from the Israeli border. Her presence underscored the European Union's significant involvement in humanitarian assistance in Gaza, particularly through the EUBAM mission. Additionally, she emphasized the EU's dedication to facilitating the ceasefire and the exchange of hostages.

After coming back to Israel, President Metsola received an update from the European Union Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing (EUBAM Rafah) regarding their mission and the continuous work being done to facilitate humanitarian aid in Gaza.

She made a trip to the Nova Festival location in Re’im and is scheduled to have discussions with Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, later today.

On Friday, the President is scheduled to visit Ramallah for discussions with Palestinian leaders. She plans to hold talks with Mr. Hussein al-Sheikh, who serves as the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. Additionally, she will meet Ms. Reem Al Hajajra, the Director of Women of the Sun and a nominee for the 2024 Sakharov Prize.

Former staff members have alleged that the chancellor participated in an "expenses scandal" during their tenure at Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) between 2006 and 2009, as reported by the BBC.

She has also faced allegations of overstating the duration of her employment at the Bank of England.

Sir Keir's representative confirmed that the prime minister fully trusts the chancellor and has "no concerns whatsoever" regarding her conduct.

He also stated, "I'm not familiar with her background before her tenure in government.

"The Prime Minister collaborates closely and completely trusts the Chancellor."

Sir Keir subsequently stated that she has addressed all concerns stemming from inquiries about her professional background prior to her tenure as an MP.

Ms. Weyper, previously with HBOS Human Resources, stated that there was "comprehensive monitoring" of all expense policies, with receipts approved by line managers, and in her position, she "would have been informed of any concluded investigations."

"She didn't specify the reasons why some people have been criticizing Rachel Reeves. Nevertheless, she mentioned not being aware of any issues and confirmed that Reeves departed from the bank amicably," she added.

Reeves 'uninformed about any probe'

A representative for Ms. Reeves stated: "Rachel values the contributions she made and the groups she directed during her tenure at HBOS. It has been 16 years since she departed from the bank, and she was first informed of these allegations when journalists recently contacted her."

"She was unaware of any ongoing investigation, had not been questioned, and did not encounter any disciplinary measures related to this or any other issues. All her expenses were properly documented and approved.

Numerous ex-colleagues from her tenure at the bank, such as the previous HR business partner from HBOS, have confirmed her story.

"Rachel parted ways with HBOS amicably in 2009."

Ms. Reeves's attorney stated that her departure from HBOS was under a "typical agreement" following a "mutually arranged separation" amid the bank's organizational changes.

David Sorensen, a managing partner at Morrish Solicitors, stated: "From what I understood, my client, who held a high-ranking position, departed amicably when HBOS plc was taken over in 2009. This is supported by the severance she received, the continued use of her company car, and other perks for six months, along with a positive recommendation."

Throughout the 2019 pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, Mr. Lai's newspaper, Apple Daily, aligned with the protesters, frequently voicing criticism against the government.

In June 2021, law enforcement officials conducted a raid on Apple Daily, during which they confiscated paperwork, locked its financial accounts, and detained top management, ultimately resulting in the shutdown of the establishment.

He also faced charges for participating in protests without permission and for committing fraud through a lease agreement, both of which he has denied. The US has criticized these charges as baseless.

The media magnate was convicted on multiple counts, one of which involved participating in a Tiananmen Square remembrance event, resulting in his incarceration in a maximum-security prison since December 2020.

What's the status of his court

In December 2023, the trial of Mr. Lai under the national security legislation commenced, addressing allegations of conspiring with foreign entities and plotting to produce and circulate seditious materials, following multiple postponements.

Following a seven-month period, the court declined to drop the charges and postponed the trial before Mr. Lai had the opportunity to give his testimony.

He remained in isolation until his trial reconvened in November of the previous year, marking the first time he testified.

The media mogul has spent over 40 days on the stand, undergoing inquiries regarding his management of editorial content at Apple Daily, connections with activists from Hong Kong, the UK, and the US, as well as his encounters with American political figures.

In his December testimony, he expressed his conviction that the UK was morally obligated to spearhead global backing for Hong Kong. However, he refuted claims that he had asked the UK government to undertake aggressive actions against China and Hong Kong.

What actions has the UK government taken?

Boris Johnson

In 2020, when Mr. Lai faced charges under the national security law, the UK's Prime Minister at the time, Boris Johnson, expressed significant concern.

This led the Chinese embassy in London to voice "serious worries" regarding the "irresponsible comments," which they described as a form of "meddling."

Diminished participation

Several vocal critics of China's policies within the British parliament, such as ex-Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, previous Tory foreign affairs committee chair Alicia Kearns, Lord Alton, and Labour MP Catherine West, have persistently brought up Mr. Lai's situation in parliamentary discussions.

James Cleverly

Tensions escalated as Mr. Cleverly addressed Mr. Lai's situation directly with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and also discussed it at the most senior levels with officials in Hong Kong.

In May 2023, Mr. Cleverly charged that Hong Kong was intentionally going after notable pro-democracy activists, media members, and political leaders to muzzle and undermine them. He noted, "Jimmy Lai, a detained British dual national, is an example of this."

Cameron, Lord and Sunak, Rishi

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron demanded the dismissal of Mr. Lai's charges and his prompt release by the end of 2023.

In a letter dated January 2024 to Lord Patten, the former governor of Hong Kong, Rishi Sunak described Mr. Lai's trial as "politically motivated" and committed to prioritizing the issue in discussions with Beijing.

Nevertheless, Mr. Sunak evaded inquiries regarding whether he had directly brought up the issue with the Chinese authorities.

Administration under Starmer

Following a shift in leadership, the family and supporters of Mr. Lai anticipated a more focused commitment.

Three months following his victory in the general election, Sir Keir emphasized that obtaining Mr. Lai's release was a key focus for his administration and affirmed that they would persist in addressing the issue with China.

Sebastien Lai appreciated the Prime Minister's statements and urged him to "turn those words into actions to rescue my father and bring him back home".

Before embarking on his initial visit to China in his role as Foreign Secretary in October, Mr. Lammy was encouraged by MPs who have faced sanctions from Beijing to address the issue of political detainees in Hong Kong, such as Mr. Lai.

The Foreign Office stated that during discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the issue of Mr. Lai's detention was addressed. Mr. Lammy expressed that he "managed to engage in discussions with the Chinese on contentious subjects, including issues pertaining to Hong Kong."

Mr. Lammy accompanied Chancellor Rachel Reeves on a journey to rejuvenate economic relationships following a period of "years of tension." She mentioned that she brought up Mr. Lai's incarceration during her meetings with each minister in China.

In a recent gathering involving Mr. Lammy and Mr. Yi, officials from Number 10 disclosed that Sir Keir had a short meeting with him, during which he expressed a desire for "steady and respectful relations" and an interest in enhancing trade ties with China.

Sky News has discovered that Mr. Farage has appointed Chris Daw KC from Lincoln House Chambers to investigate the possibility of initiating a criminal lawsuit against the major high street bank.

Allegations suggest she splurged on a variety of items including handbags, earrings, wine, taxi rides, a Christmas celebration, and indeed, perfume, all amounting to hundreds of pounds.

The claims seem dubious at first glance, yet she maintains that she was unaware of any investigation and that no one questioned her.

Kemi Badenoch is insisting that she be fully transparent, not only regarding her résumé but also about the conditions surrounding her departure from HBOS.

According to her lawyer, he was under the impression that when Ms. Reeves departed, it was amicably. She retained her company car and additional perks for a half-year and received a positive recommendation.

"David Sorenson from Leeds-based Morrish Solicitors firmly states that the HBOS HR team did not bring up any claims of improper behavior or misconduct throughout the procedure."

Former HBOS HR director, Jayne Wayper, also states: "The allegations and claims directed at Rachel Reeves are unfamiliar to me."

All of this adds to the ongoing "CV-gate" scandal, indicating that "Rachel from Accounts" might have exaggerated her credentials, presenting herself as "Rachel from the Bank of England" rather than the more accurate "Rachel from HBOS" that she truly is.

Critics, including members from her own Labour Party, are relentless, and the female politician, who often draws comparisons to Gordon Brown with her "iron chancellor" persona, finds her reputation under severe scrutiny once more.

Her main issue is that she frequently touts her background as an economist at the Bank of England and her experience in banking as reasons why voters should have confidence in her handling of the country's financial affairs.
