Christian Horner Mediates Tensions Between Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase Following Hungarian GP ‘Blip
Christian Horner explains that Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase had a meeting to talk about the recent "blip."
"We had a conversation on Thursday. I believe it's just a minor issue, and we are moving forward."
Christian Horner disclosed that he had a meeting with Max Verstappen and race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to resolve any issues after the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
During last weekend's race at the Hungaroring, Verstappen expressed his displeasure with his engineer, Lambiase, and the entire Red Bull team.
The Dutch driver was frustrated with Red Bull's choice to pit him late, causing him to fall behind Lewis Hamilton.
Lambiase informed Verstappen that he was not interested in participating in an immature back-and-forth over the team radio after the Red Bull driver’s incident at Turn 1.
On Thursday at Spa-Francorchamps, Horner attended a meeting where they addressed the situation.
In an interview with Sky Sports on Saturday, Horner mentioned, "Max has been with us for eight years. His passion is a key element of his character and a significant factor in his excellence."
"When he feels upset, he expresses his frustration. We've witnessed this on numerous occasions. If every Premier League player had a microphone, you'd likely hear similar outbursts. The issue nowadays is that there's a microphone capturing everything he says before he gets in the car, while he's in the car, and when he steps out of the car."
"He was expressing his frustrations in a way that wasn't pleasant to hear, but it shows how deeply he cares about his work. His emotions flare up and then settle down. He and GP have known each other for a long time and understand each other completely. We had a conversation about it on Thursday. I believe it's just a minor incident and we should move forward."
Horner joked that it felt ‘a bit like therapy’ and suggested that the most effective way to resolve any problems is through open discussion.
Horner commented, "It's similar to having some counseling. By Thursday, everyone is ready to tackle the weekend. The most effective way to handle any problem is to discuss it thoroughly. Max and GP have done just that. They've moved on and are now concentrating on this week, aiming to enter the summer break in the best condition possible."
Horner also justified his choice to avoid interfering through team radio.
"There's really no purpose in doing that," he clarified. "It will only aggravate him. Max is giving it everything he's got, driving with tremendous passion. You'll just end up making things worse."
"You simply allow him to express his emotions. He settles down rapidly. By the time we reached the airport that evening, he was completely composed. Each driver has their own way of handling things. When you listen to Oscar on the radio, he remains silent. In contrast, Max has a different reaction."
