Christian Horner interrogated over visibly upset response to Sergio Perez’s blunder
Christian Horner was questioned about the "frustration" he showed when he shook his head in dismay at Sergio Perez.
Last weekend, during the F1 British Grand Prix qualifying session, Red Bull's embattled second driver triggered a red flag after spinning out at Copse corner.
Team leader Horner was seen expressing his disappointment after an error caused Perez to secure the 19th qualifying position at Silverstone.
Horner expressed that it's naturally frustrating when neither of your vehicles are delivering a strong performance, speaking in reaction to his evident irritation over Perez's mistake.
"It was disappointing to see Checo get eliminated in Q1. He had already missed the first practice session due to Isack Hadjar driving, but he had a solid performance in the second session. We believed he should have been among the top six."
"It was extremely frustrating to lose the car in the first qualifying session. That's our current situation."
Horner has acknowledged that Red Bull opted to offer Perez a new contract as a strategy to alleviate stress and boost his confidence, in recognition of his strong performance early in the season.
However, this approach has failed. His string of recent errors has led to increased speculation about whether Red Bull will take him out of their car.
Reporters questioned whether Red Bull had prematurely extended a new contract to Horner.
"Each driver is unique," he replied.
"Certain drivers require encouragement, others respond better to strict discipline, and the approach may need to change from one week to the next."
Perez began the British Grand Prix from the pitlane and ended up in 17th place, just ahead of Zhou Guanyu, after Red Bull's risky tyre strategy failed.
However, his recent problematic weekend enabled McLaren to narrow their deficit to Red Bull to 78 points in the constructors' championship.
Horner responded by saying, "They took seven points from us."
“We are very conscious of it.
"In order to clinch a constructors' championship, it's essential for both vehicles to earn points."
Under early-season pressure, Perez managed to secure second place behind Verstappen in three races, achieving excellent outcomes for Red Bull.
Simultaneously, Daniel Ricciardo, who was speculated to be his replacement, was struggling with a streak of underperformance while driving for the Red Bull sister team.
However, as the competition has become more balanced and the RB20's dominance has diminished, Verstappen continues to battle at the front while Perez's struggles have resurfaced.
Speculation has resurfaced regarding Ricciardo potentially taking over Perez's position, as Red Bull's junior driver Liam Lawson recently took the wheel of the RB20 during a promotional event. However, Horner maintains that the timing of this is purely coincidental.
