Christian Horner Attributes George Russell’s Belgian GP Disqualification to Mercedes’ Calculation Error
Christian Horner describes George Russell’s disqualification as 'an error in Mercedes' calculations'
“It’s truly unfortunate for George, but it was clearly a miscalculation on their part.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner thinks that George Russell’s disqualification at the F1 Belgian Grand Prix resulted from an error in Mercedes’ “calculations”.
Russell's Mercedes F1 car was 1.5 kilograms too light, leading to his disqualification from the race results at Spa-Francorchamps.
This was revealed during the FIA's inspections following the race.
It has been proposed that Russell's brilliant single-stop approach during the Belgian Grand Prix was a contributing factor.
This hypothesis was additionally proposed by Horner, who shared his thoughts on the matter with Sky Sports News.
"Absolutely, without a doubt. You must have lost more than a kilogram of rubber," he explained. "We noticed that on Friday."
"You need to have sufficient fuel to complete the sampling. If not, the fuel itself will act as a counterweight."
“It’s unfortunate for George, but it’s clear there was an error in their computations.”
Russell's disqualification moved Charles Leclerc up to third place, marking his first podium finish since the Monaco race.
Expressing his opinion on the matter, Leclerc stated: "No one prefers to receive a podium position due to the disqualification of a fellow competitor."
“They performed exceptionally well today. The outcome wasn’t influenced by any weight difference. They secured the victory because they were the better team today.”
“Nonetheless, it’s challenging to make an exception in this situation, and it’s reasonable that they were disqualified.
"It's regrettable because he performed excellently, and so did Mercedes. This is just a part of the racing world."
