Christian Horner Addresses Concerns Over Sergio Perez’s Future Amidst Belgian GP Struggles
Christian Horner questioned regarding Sergio Perez’s prospects following a slip in the Belgian Grand Prix
Christian Horner responded to inquiries from journalists, including those from Crash.net, about Sergio Perez’s showing in Belgium.
Red Bull's team leader Christian Horner acknowledges that the team was surprised by Sergio Perez's drop to seventh place in the Belgian Grand Prix.
There was considerable optimism that the beleaguered Mexican driver could secure a podium finish and halt his recent decline in performance, especially since he had his best qualifying session since April's Chinese Grand Prix and began the race in second position at Spa-Francorchamps.
Perez got off to a bad start, losing his position to Lewis Hamilton right away and continued to slip down the ranks as the race went on. He crossed the finish line in eighth place, three spots behind his teammate Max Verstappen. However, Perez moved up to seventh place after George Russell was disqualified for having an underweight car in the post-race inspection.
When questioned by Crash.net about whether Red Bull had higher expectations for Perez in Belgium, Horner responded: "Before the race, starting from the front row, we believed that finishing in third and fifth places was within reach."
"We managed to secure fifth place, but we fell short of third. It's clear we need to analyze the data to figure out why his speed dropped."
When asked if Red Bull was unhappy with Perez's performance, Horner responded: "Given his starting position, we didn't expect him to finish in eighth place after beginning the race in second."
"Checo has faced a series of challenging races recently. What puzzles us is that he began the season on such a strong note, but his performance has since declined," Horner commented.
"He performed excellently in the qualifying rounds yesterday. Clearly, we need to investigate and comprehend the problems that occurred during the race. We have the opportunity to examine these issues thoroughly and collaborate with him to address them."
Today, Red Bull is scheduled to have a meeting where the future of Perez is likely to be a key topic. Horner tried to minimize the importance of the meeting and emphasized that "no one" is interested in the idea of making a driver change mid-season.
"We have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, which is Monday," he mentioned. "It's not solely focused on Checo; there are other issues to discuss, as we typically have before the summer break."
According to our perspective, increasing Max's lead before the summer break would allow him to relax more. Our primary concern, however, is the constructors' championship, where we've lost another seven or eight points today.
"We must change our performance after the break in Zandvoort."
In response to a question from Crash.net about the timeframe Red Bull is granting Perez to improve his performance, Horner said: "I believe he fully understands the necessity for both cars to be competitive."
"This is where we started at the beginning of the year, and it's where we need to return."
