China’s Security Chief Vows Firm Crackdown on Separatism in Tibet Amid Heightened Tensions Ahead of National Day Celebrations
China's top security official demands a firm clampdown on separatist activities in Tibetan regions
During Chen Wenqing's four-day tour, security measures are intensified in the politically delicate Tibet region as the October 1 National Day approaches.
During his recent visit to the western regions last week, China's security chief emphasized that the main focus for security forces in Tibetan areas is to preserve stability and prevent any movements towards independence.
During his journey, which included visits to the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, Chen emphasized the need to firmly oversee religious matters and staunchly safeguard customary religious practices. This approach aims to mitigate risks, combat criminal activities, and uphold stability.
The four-day tour concluded on Friday, marking Chen's inaugural inspection visit around the region following the party's third policymaking plenum in July, and occurred just before the National Day celebrations on October 1.
China is gearing up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic, with increased security measures being implemented in the critical Tibet area.
The visit occurred just weeks after top U.S. officials held a meeting with the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, in New York.
