Chevy Bolt EV Hit by Another Recall: Software Glitch Raises Fire Risk in Select Vehicles
Chevrolet has issued another recall for a limited number of Bolt EVs that were previously called back for battery fire risks, indicating the issue persists.
Though not a fresh problem, GM's active review of maintenance logs showed that certain cars failed to have diagnostic software installed, which was supposed to be a part of the recall solution.
This signifies the initiation of another set of recall documents (alongside dealership maintenance) for 66 distinct 2020-2022 Bolt EVs and 6 unique 2022 Bolt EUVs. GM indicates that in these particular vehicles, there's a possibility that "advanced diagnostic software may have been improperly set up which might not identify faulty battery modules, potentially leading to a battery fire."
GM has not been notified of any occurrences related to the software problem, but the company discovered through internal checks that its service software system could permit a mechanic to approve a vehicle's warranty claim even if the software wasn't fully installed, as detailed in the documentation for the recall.

Guidelines for the operators of the impacted cars are reminiscent of the previous guidance given during the Bolt EV's initial battery recall by GM. They suggest limiting the charge capacity to 90%, ensuring not to drain the battery under a range of 70 miles, parking the vehicle outdoors post-charging, and refraining from charging the car inside overnight.
Owners fortunate enough to have their vehicle recalled for service will start receiving notifications from approximately August 5, 2024. In the interim, those with a Bolt EV can reach out for inquiries at 833-382-4389.
In a minor segment of General Motors' extensive battery recall in 2021, this particular instance affects a fraction of the 140,000 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV vehicles across North America. The recall, while focused on more recent models, led to numerous 2017-2019 Bolt EV owners receiving upgraded battery packs, which inadvertently increased their vehicles' driving range beyond the initial capacity.

Under the terms of a collective legal agreement involving the Bolt EV, individuals who own these vehicles may receive a payment ranging from $700 to $1,400, with General Motors and LG Energy Solution being the responsible parties.
The manufacturing of the Bolt EV ceased in December 2023, however, as per GM's recent announcement, it retained its position as Chevy's highest-selling electric vehicle for the initial six months of 2024, with sales outpacing the Blazer EV during that timeframe. Earlier in the year, GM's chief executive, Mary Barra, assured that the Chevy Bolt EV, set to make a comeback in 2025 for the 2026 model year, will be the most economically priced electric vehicle in the United States.
