Charles Leclerc Warns Ferrari’s Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Consistent Wins in 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for consistent victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledges progress, but maintains that it's not yet at a winning level.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance if they aim to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance at Monza with the fastest car.
Ferrari unveiled a major set of improvements for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Since Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza is another track with its own distinct characteristics."
“There were many straight sections and few turns on the track. We also had a rear wing designed for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don’t think it will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on different tracks.
"We have much work ahead of us, but I'm very pleased to have achieved this here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, reminding everyone of the similar predictions of a title bid that came after his victory in Monaco.
“We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition between these two weekends was quite significant.”
“We then experienced three or four of our most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of tough races going forward, and I believe that won't happen.”
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
