Charles Leclerc Voices Caution Despite Ferrari’s Monza Victory, Urges Realistic Expectations for 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements aren’t sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledges the progress but believes it won’t be enough to consistently win races.
Charles Leclerc cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by successfully utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, which underscored McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco suited our car's characteristics then. Monza is also a unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which played a part in our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season across different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have won one here in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has lowered expectations, referring to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. Therefore, we need to start fresh. We managed to do that when transitioning from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the shift from one weekend to the next was substantial."
"We experienced some of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another string of challenging races in the future, and I believe that's unlikely to happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic."
"Did we make progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
