Charles Leclerc shares an emotional memory about a conversation he had with his father
Charles Leclerc recounts a poignant tale about his father Herve
Charles Leclerc shared a poignant story about a discussion he had with his father just before his father died.
Herve Leclerc passed away in 2017 just as his gifted son was on his way to securing the Formula 2 championship.
Their shared aspiration was for Charles to secure a position in Formula 1.
Charles falsely informed his father that he had secured an F1 contract, just before Herve died.
Charles shared with The Gentleman’s Journal that he understood the significance of their shared journey.
"I found it extremely hard to come to terms with the fact that he would pass away before I had the chance to sign my initial Formula 1 contract."
"Initially, I felt a lot of self-anger for deceiving him, but fortunately, I signed the real contract immediately after he departed."
"I was fulfilling my dream, and I felt very glad that I hadn't deceived him in the end."
Currently, Leclerc is a Ferrari driver who has achieved victory in grand prix races and aspires to win the championship. This season, he celebrated his first-ever win at his home race in Monaco.
However, his adventure in Formula 1 began alongside his father.
He remembered another incident from when he was a child: “I deceived my father by pretending to be sick. I claimed I was ill, but it was a lie; I simply wanted to avoid going to school. He trusted me, so he had to take care of me at home."
"By chance, he needed to visit his best friend, Philippe Bianchi, who was running a karting track located an hour and a half away from Monaco, and I accompanied him on the trip."
This was Leclerc’s initial time karting.
"From then on, I knew for certain that it was what I wanted to pursue," he stated.
Charles recalled how his father guided him through every step necessary to reach Formula 1.
"He was incredibly enthusiastic and clearly had my best interests at heart. Once he noticed that I enjoyed it, which was his main concern, he ensured that he provided me with the best guidance to excel in the sport."
Charles has also experienced the loss of another significant figure in both his Formula 1 career and personal life – Jules Bianchi, a fellow racer and Charles' godfather.
Charles mentioned that the person was the son of his father's closest friend, who happened to be in charge of the karting track on the day he first experienced it.
"He supported my professional journey until his tragic accident in Japan in 2014."
In 2015, 25-year-old Jules Bianchi passed away from injuries he suffered during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Current drivers, including his godson Charles Leclerc, frequently honor him with tributes.
Charles explained that the individuals he has lost were those who always had his best interests at heart. Whenever he pondered what they would want him to do, the answer was clear: his father would simply want him to put on his helmet and win races.
One can mentally prepare for numerous scenarios, particularly in my career, such as maintaining focus and calmness during high-pressure moments.
"However, no amount of preparation can truly equip you for facing a deeply challenging personal experience."
