Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari’s Progress: ‘Not Enough’ for Consistent Wins Despite Monza Triumph
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season.’ He stated, "Is it sufficient to secure wins from now until the season's conclusion? I don't believe so, but we've made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to regularly compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by employing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outpace McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren had the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
In the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's characteristics were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a track with its own unique and distinct features."
"A lot of straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we made another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm truly pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered hopes, referencing the previous buzz about a potential championship run after his victory in Monaco.
"Our performance has been excellent this weekend, but Baku and Singapore could present entirely different challenges. We need to approach each race with a fresh perspective. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, but the difference between those two weekends was significant."
"We had a tough stretch of three or four races as we tried to figure out what was happening with our car. Moving forward, I hope we avoid such challenging races, and I believe we will."
"However, it is crucial that both the team and external observers maintain realistic expectations and avoid letting them skyrocket after just one race."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races consistently for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we have certainly moved in the right direction."
