Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Monza Success Not a Guarantee for Season-Long Victory
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest upgrade is ‘insufficient’ for securing victories through the rest of the season.
“Will it allow us to consistently win races until the season concludes? I doubt it, but we have made significant progress.”
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance with the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Since Monaco, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track suited our car's unique characteristics at that time. Monza, too, is a very distinctive and unique circuit."
“There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other circuits."
"I believe there's still much to be done, but I'm truly pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations by referencing previous discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to start fresh each time. We managed to do that when transitioning from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the shift from one weekend to the next was substantial."
"We had several of our toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out issues with our car. Hopefully, we won’t face another stretch of challenging races, and I don't believe that will happen."
“However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don’t skyrocket from one race to the next, as this is unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
