Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Wins Until Season’s End
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements may fall short of securing victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it sufficient to win races from now until the end of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've made a significant move in the right direction," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance further to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season, taking advantage of a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season. Monaco suited our car's characteristics perfectly at that time. Similarly, Monza is a unique and specialized circuit."
"There were numerous straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has closed the gap with McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm truly pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco Grand Prix, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing the similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but the situation in Baku might be quite different, and the same goes for Singapore. Therefore, it's crucial for us to recalibrate. We successfully made adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, but the transition from one weekend to the next brought significant changes."
"We struggled through three or four of the season's toughest races, all while trying to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't face another series of challenging races like that, and I don't believe we will."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket unrealistically from one race to the next."
"Have we made some progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races consistently for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
