Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough for Season-Long Wins Despite Monza Triumph
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvements may fall short of securing victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it sufficient to clinch wins for the rest of the year? I doubt it, but we've certainly made significant progress," he remarked.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by making the most of a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, demonstrating that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise "caution".
“We need to exercise caution,” he stated. “Since Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, given that Monaco's track suited our car uniquely at that moment. Monza is another track that has its own distinct characteristics.”
“There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren. However, I don't think this makes our car the one to beat for the remainder of the season on other circuits.”
"We still have plenty of tasks ahead, yet I'm very pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Even after a challenging period following the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tried to temper expectations, referencing the comparable speculation about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the conditions in Baku will likely be quite distinct, and Singapore will also present a unique set of challenges. Therefore, it's crucial for us to recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, but the shift between those two weekends was significant."
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't face another stretch of tough races ahead, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and do not skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
